Re: Front Door Frame

If someone tried to kick it in before, they might be back. Beef up the doorjamb with a 2X4 and use plenty of screws to hold it all together. My brother had a break-in at his house awhile back, we laid 3 2X4s on the lock side of the jam, and screwed them all together with 5 inch long screws. We also ...

Re: Buying on Line?

If you buy one online, try to find a dealer not too far from you, save some money on shipping that way. I ended up finding a sink at a Habitat for Humanity store, just had to trip the counter a little to fit. Got lucky on that one!!!

Re: Poorly Done Exterior Walls - Need Help

+1 on getting good quality windows(they will pay for themselves, energy efficiency)
Some types of windows qualify for a energy savings tax credit, check into that too.

I would STRONGLY recommend Tyvec or equivalent underneath the siding as well. Keep that moisture out!!!

Re: Replacing odd size door

Two ways to go here, either buy a "standard" size door and cut it to fit, or expand the rough opening to fit a standard size door. Either will require a little bit of work. If it were my home, I would expand the rough opening to fit a standard door. When its taken apart I also like to beef...

Re: Help > Where do I begin???

1) When you get cracks like that in a tub, its a goner and should be replaced. Try to figure out why the tub cracked. Is it a bad floor underneath, unlevel home, poor materials or installation?? If it were my home, Id pull out the tub, repair/replace the floor with plywood as necessary, and replace ...

Re: when the wind blows my chimney has a clanging noise...

Look for a possible foreign object in the pipe that rattles around in the wind too. Ive found a few walnuts and acorns put up there from the local squirrels. Could also be the flapper itself rattling around inside the pipe.

Re: Really need help!

Jadedone24,
If you can get that base shelf out without too much difficulty, do it. If you find the source of your smell, clean it up, and make sure you seal up any ways for animals to get in. That way you dont get a repeat performance... :)

Re: Really need help!

If the plumbing is working properly, there is a possibility you have a dead animal somewhere in the belly.

Re: Water -- Slow-moving!

Remove and clean the screen at the very end of the faucet, then start working back from there. Check the fixture internally for gunk or obstructions, something might have worked loose during the plumbing work. Check the hot and cold shut-offs under the sink, if equipped. Keep working backwards until...

Re: Installing Light Fixtures

You can install a light fixture in that fashion, just use a ceiling electrical box with an adjustable bar. You feed the box through the hole in your ceiling, adjust the bar until you get to the two mounting rafters, feed the wire through the knockout hole in the box, and hook up your light fixture.

If youve got clay soil down to 70 inches, you should be in great shape.

Re: Dirt Pad Material

I would contact an excavating company for the best advice, they do this kind of thing all the time. If you want to do the work yourself, I would get a soil test, and see if the material youre working with will handle the load of the home.

Re: Vinyl Upholstered Ceiling Beams??

I have had a similar situation on a mobile I was working on awhile ago. Previous owners damaged the "beam" vinyl covering. I found some leftover laminate flooring on craigslist and used it to cover the beam across the kitchen/living room. I made some trim for the seams from 1X3s and staine...

Couldnt hurt to add a couple drops of wood glue too, to hold it together.
