Our unit is on the back of our mobile home and it does get direct sun should we consider and enclosure or roof covering the unit to make it work less and last longer?

It couldn't hurt to cover it to get it out of the sun, but it does need air.

Being in the sun or being in the shade won't affect it either way. It would not be a could idea to cover it or enclose it. It needs to have good air flow around it for it to function properly. You should start elsewhere if you looking into trying to saving energy.
