Paint Bedroom and Closet Doors

We recently purchased a new double wide. All of the interior doors are white - appear to be plastic coated. We would like to change the color to brown or more wood like. Has anyone had any experience with these doors? What kind of paint do you use? We saw a show on HGTV or DIY where they stained the doors. The finished product was not very appealing. Any ideas? Thanks!
