How far can a mobile home be from its septic tank?

Our septic tank is about 15 ft from the house, but if I were to move my home to a better location on our land, 40 or 50 ft away from the tank, would that work? Is there a reason why septic tanks are so close to houses? Ours is the old fashioned septic tank, by the way. No pumps or sprinkler systems or anything like that.

Thanks!

As far as I know there is no max. distance, you may need to add a pump if the distance is excessive, but 50' should be fine. Greg

Carol - We have our septic about 50 feet away from the house... the building inspector had us get the slope of the new line to the septic approved by the water district people--and their only concern--with that distance is getting a good enough slope.
Also a problem because some of the pipe is very close to the surface and we have to worry about that freezing where we are--so we're covering it up with insulation and a berm type wall--which they approved. We have no pumps and haven't had any trouble with everything getting to the right place :)
Good luck!
