Re: Doorstops/"door stops"
Yeah, was thinking about the knob stops, but was curious to hear people's thoughts on them. The spring stops, these didn't come to mind, probably because I don't have baseboards, though maybe someday... but, with the doors set so high off the floor I'd have to have some pretty high baseboards. Need ...

Re: Drain for hot water heater pan
Sorry if I wasn't making myself clear... I was wanting to know whether I could tie the two -pressure relief overflow and "drip" overflow- together instead of having to plumb in a separate line/pipe for the "drip." Yes, I know that drip pans do nothing in the event of a blow out, ...

Drain for hot water heater pan
On my seemingly expanding list of projects is to install an overflow/drip pan under the hot water heater (this is assuming I can- have not yet verified that one would fit). Could I tap into the line for the pressure relief valve drain instead of plumbing in another pipe/line? BTW - It's a propane he...

Doorstops/"door stops"
What do people recommend as replacement doorstops? I'm re-doing my flooring and will need to put something back in place. The originals are pretty ucky-looking, and I really don't like stuff on the floor (not to mention drilling into the laminates to put them back).

Re: Laminate flooring, orientation, transitions and entrance
I opted not to go with squaring things out and instead went with angled cuts. It was a pain because I had to flip over the planks in order to cut them on my saw. Will post pictures later. Back to playing with the leveling compound in the living room...

Re: Laminate flooring, orientation, transitions and entrance
The den and it's (near) 45 degree angled entrance. Picture shows my two options for expansion/transition strips. Straight across would mean that I'd have over 2 feet of "rise" (rise over run) to try to handle not one, but two sides of the flooring such that I don't end up with small pieces...

Re: Laminate flooring, orientation, transitions and entrance
Finally! Master bedroom done! (except transition pieces) Nice to be sleeping in the "final resting spot"
Here are some pictures: Now to the den... (will make separate post)

Re: Laminate flooring, orientation, transitions and entrance
What's going on there? Lucky you, you can actually see the tops of your counters! :-) (I've got stuff piled everywhere from my recent/on-going move) BTW - Seeing as I'm in a hurry to get the flooring down everything conspired against me today! After fishing out something my wife dropped down the kit...

Re: Laminate flooring, orientation, transitions and entrance
Soon I'll be needing to account for the transition strips, the spacing. In the first bedroom I'm parallel to the opening and have only to drop in a last piece. But... for the master bedroom I'll be running perpendicular and will need to continue on past it (along the back wall and into the closet). ...

Re: Laminate flooring, orientation, transitions and entrance
It's good to make some headway. With this bedroom done we can actually sleep somewhere other than the kitchen! Next up with be the master bedroom so that we can get a real bed set up (air mattresses are fine for a couple of days). I splurged on the saw- a Royobi, which works really well (had great r...

Re: Exterior door jamb repair
Ha ha! I've got to get one or two (will need a livestock guardian dog or two). My wife telecommutes and is home alone a fair amount of time; plus, her hearing isn't great! Initially she didn't want animals in the house, but she's since, wisely, adjusted this thinking :-) But, yes, security in layers!

Re: Laminate flooring, orientation, transitions and entrance
Update! Got vinyl planking down in the kitchen and laundry rooms. And... got laminates done in one bedroom (my test room). I consulted with a carpenter friend, who was a bit perplexed as to what was going on, and the only real reason he could come up with is that the floor joists were likely hemlock...

Re: Laminate flooring, orientation, transitions and entrance
I picked up a long straight edge and ran it over several locations in the floor. The good is that the kitchen, where I am wanting to start, seems pretty level (straight surface). The bad is that I'm finding several hills and valleys elsewhere. It's like the particle board is sagging or something bet...

Re: What the heck IS this? (odd plumbing shutoff valve?)
Well, I braved potential disaster and yanked the top up, and lo and behold it popped up and the water is off! Pretty tough pull, but yeah, that did it!

Re: What the heck IS this? (odd plumbing shutoff valve?)
I pull it up to shut it off, or do I push it down? The dishwasher wasn't in use, so I don't know what it's on/off state is. I suppose that I could have gotten a clue from the ones in the bathrooms (easier to check water from faucets/toilets rather than trying to run the dishwasher [which I don't kno...
