Washing maching shaking house

I replaced the washer and dryer with a stacked washer/dryer laundry center. Now I'm almost regretting it. The vibration of the washer is causing vibrations. And you know what that means. I tried the pads...the 4 square ones. Couldn't even use them. The laundry center is in a closet. There is NO ROOM...

Baseboard heaters- under or not under recepticle?

My research found the manufacturers say not to install under receptacles due to heat issues and items plugged in....not smart to do. However, they are pretty much standard in "6 inches" as being the zone of concern. My question is this- IF a receptacle is ONLY used for a window a/c- if you...

Re: What to use to prep floors for vinyl squares? Pictures

That looks great!

I didn't know we could do that....so I put down luan on top of the plywood, and then my tiles. Guess it was overkill and a waste of money.

Re: The kind of A.C. units in motels

That would be great if you would come back and post what you find out. I removed my ductwork/furnace for that very reason. Ductwork is a pain! Maybe not for everyone or in every location. But I'm in the woods and after the heater just losing ability year after year, I crawled underneath and discover...

Re: Sagging outer walls, water problems and more...

Others will give you advice. The only reason I saved my home was because it was level, even after 40 years. The frame (ceiling rafters, floor joists, and studs in walls) were in great shape. If they weren't, I don't know if I could have repaired them. But I have never used a hammer before, or a saw-...

Re: Insulation?

I'm in NC. My plan is to take down the siding (it's just screwed on in panels) and remove the insulation and then put in the vapor barrier- all the way to the inside of the paneling. It will be a pain working around studs and such...but it has to get done. My walls are only 2 inches- I have a very o...

Re: The kind of A.C. units in motels

What is the name for the typical motel AC/heating unit in most motels? They are installed in the wall but are larger than a typical "window" unit. Usually they are installed low down, near the floor and have a lift up door for accessing the controls. What are they called and why don't we ...

Re: Repairs Worth It?

My goal is to AVOID paying anything to anyone...and a stick built house would mean the TAX COLLECTOR would have his hands in my pocket constantly. For me, it's so I won't have to spend X amount on a house and then in reality pay 3x as much because mortgages are nothing but interest payments for year...

Yep! That carpet is a sponge! But remove it and your wall will sink 1/2"....got to shim up the wall if you remove the flooring hidden underneath.

OTHER hvac

I'm posting here in the 'other' forum- besides the main heat sources listed, what are the other ones? I've lived without heat for 2 winters and can't take another winter....it's time to get my heat squared away. I have to have maintenance free, as in if it breaks- fix it myself or toss it out and ge...

Re: Repairs Worth It?

You have to define your goal- do you want to live there to save $ on house/interest fees from 30 yr mortgage/taxes/ hiring repair people? Or are you going to rent them out? Resell them? Like Greg said, you have to add up ALL the costs, and just like stick built homes, most go over budget. I chose to...

Re: Insulation?

I didn't know any better and just put up insulation- NO VAPOR BARRIER. And I have everything sealed, mouldings, done! I just can't rip down the walls again so I'm going from the outside in- yep, gonna take off the siding to access the walls. It's a pain, but that vapor barrier is vital!

Help me choose a new front door

I want one without windows so a 6 panel door would be just fine. But I want a storm door- all glass. My other house had a storm door...and the front door could be left open and no air/draft/cold came in. It was like a second door. Is this the same thing? Is the storm door airtight? http://www.triadm...

I am planning a new metal roof very soon. My trailer is a 1968 Monarck which is 12' x 48' and has a curved roof with a peak opposite the curve. My question to graceNC is the size of the panel that was used. What is the width? I know the length is 144" but I was confused(easy to do) as to the w...

Re: Total Renovation Possible?

Wow! Your home looks to be in great shape! You'll have other posts but my motto: if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Sometimes removing walls, that don't need to be moved can open up a can of worms...when there aren't any worms...if you know what I mean. IF you have great insulation already, I'd recons...
