Pre Cast Concrete or Metal Skirting opinions

Postby cburns70 » Wed Mar 25, 2009 1:14 pm

Hi group,

I live just outside of Dallas, TX and I need to replace my vinyl skirting.

I'm considering either using metal or concrete. I do not want to go back to vinyl. Between the wind and wild dogs my skirting is in bad shape.

I'm on my own property as well so I would like to have something that is semi-permanent.

I was wondering if there is anyone out there with concrete skirting. If so, how do you like it?

What's the approximate cost of Metal vs. Concrete installed on a double wide 44'x28'?

After my new skirting is installed I'm planning on putting river rock on top of a four foot weed barrier all the way around my house. I was thinking that concrete skirting might be better for this.

Thanks.

Hi,
I can't help you out with info on concrete but my home is the same size as yours and I had metal skirting installed last year. It cost me about $2,500 and was worth every penny, as far as I'm concerned! It's sturdy and immovable and holds up to aggressive weed-eating without any problems at all!

I may have had it done cheaper if I went with a general construction guy but the mobile home specialist I hired is so highly regarded and recommended that I felt confident in hiring him, and he and his team didn't disappoint. Plus, they inspected everything underneath my home after they removed all of the vinyl skirting and discovered I had a small leak, which they fixed free of charge.

I don't know a whole lot about MH requirements and such, but don't you need a certain number of vents in the skirting so moisture doesn't build up underneath? I remember the contractor telling me that and how vents were required every so many feet. How would that work with concrete skirting?

I have had concrete block with a stuco finish on the exterior for over 14 years now with no problems. Most new double wides you see around here now have block or brick skirting.

Teatime, they just cut an opening in the block the size of a foundation vent with a concrete saw at the required intervals. The vents are installed in the top row of block.

We have a poured concrete foundation around our home and have never had any problems at all. Our home has been here in the Mojave desert since 1990.
You can see what it looks like in the before picture I posted on the decoration and landscaping forum under Our deck project.

Hi & welcome. Check the articals section of the site for "A better skirting idea" It was written by Mark, The owner if this site when he installed metal skirting on his home.

I think a few here have done concrete skirting also, perhaps they will add to this.

The formula for ventilation is 1 sq foot of vent per 100 sq foot of ground under the home. Greg

I have T1-11 type cement fiberboard siding panels as skirting and I love it, though I did some additional work to get it attached to my home.

Thanks for all the replys.

Aaron, did you use something like Hardie Board for your skirting?

I was looking into something like this: http://concreteskirting.com/

Yes, Hardie Siding Panels cut in half. I also have a 2x12 band board with a water table on top that I installed around the perimeter of my house. I need to get a picture, though it's not all completed. Money for these things seems so slow lately.
