I have been researching what kind of primer to use and have found that it should be oil based. Is this true?

Most people choose to go with Latex paints due to the fact it’s easier to work with and dries quickly. As long as a latex, stain-blocking primer is used then latex should be sufficient. But, if you are looking for maximum durability than oil based paints would be the best option. But, keep in mind that clean up can be a challenge as oil based paints require turpentine or paint thinner (mineral spirits).
