Pressure tank pressure

I drained out my entire waterline system to prevent a freeze and busting pipes. I now have replaced some pipes that have cracked and re-fired the water system by turning the pump back on. I can hear and feel the jet of water bursting into the pressure tank I get water out of the faucets, but the pressure guage at the T quickly goes past 65 PSI and keeps on climbing. I end up turning the pump off and cracking the faucets open to bleed the pressure off before something burst.
Am I safe? is this normal when you fire the water system back up? Al lI have ever seen that guage read was 40 PSI before draining the lines.
Just don't want to cause an explosion.
