Use Robertson head screws (square) with the proper size bit. Using the proper bit in good condition it should snap the head off of the screw before it will slip.

Thanks for all the replies. I bought brand new bits to use with the screws, they fit snug as can be. I think I just need to pre-drill into the joists themselves to help out the screws.
