Self service ??

Hello to all !
This will be the first fall we are in our home. We have a Nordyne mod # C3QA036UB.
We are gonna call a service man to come check it out for winter. That will be in Nov. when we can afford it. Until then is there anything I should check ? I know the ducts are clean cause I cleaned them during the summer. How does the furnace work? It don't have anything to do with the A coil does it?? I'm just trying to figure out if there is anything to clean>
