Adding an Outside Compressor for AC; Put Return Where?

I'm adding an a-coil to the furnace and a new 2-ton Intertherm unit outside for AC. Where should I locate the return-air register in the floor AND where should I locate the unit outside?
Return-Air Register:
In the corner of the living room?
Near the furnace?
Outside AC Unit:
Near the return-air register?
Near the furnace?
Does it matter?

What is furnace model number ?
Is your furnace a downflow with floor supply registers throughout the home ?

The best I could tell was that it was manufactured on 08/25/1987.

Hi,
When it was installed, did it come set up for a/c ? Did it have two door panels ? Solid bottom door in front of furnace and a louvered upper door ?
If so, the a-coil sit atop the furnace and the return air comes in through the upper louvered door.
If not and you have an open top furnace with a flat filter in the top opening, remove the filter, a-coil will sit atop the furnace and you have return air coming through a filter grille in wall in front of the a-coil.
Then the outside condensing unit needs to be placed as close to furnace/a-coil as possible to have least length of refrigerant line set.
An hvac tech would be advised here to ensure proper install to meet codes and give quality comfort level.
