filling the holes on the fake wood trim?

OK, I searched Spackle and nail holes. I get a lot of posts about filling the wallboard holes with Spackle or joint compound. What I don't get is any information on filling the nail holes on the fake wood trim around the doors and "base boards'. It's been my thought to paint these. Has anyone had success filling these ragged paper edges with something that doesn't scream 'nail hole' when it's painted over? I've got pretty good results filling in the wall board, but this trim is kicke'n my confidence all over town....heheheheee.......Thanks!
Thanks Greg! I purchased the Guardsman color trio for some places on the cabinets. It is technique time so I've cleared out the pantry, taken all the shelving down and practicing filling in holes in the wall board. The 'contact paper' wood trim definitely needs a smoother touch. One step away from the priming.
