I want a standard door here. Any tips before I do this?
I can't replace mine with a wider door because of hurricane strapping on either side, so the door must be the same width or slightly narrower. That means I don't have to worry about the light switch next to it too. But what about the header? Did you just mark out the size on the outside sheathing, cut though the studs with a reciprocating saw, and raise the existing header?
My walls are 2X6 too, so I probably cant just hack through it at one time. What kind of job am I in for? How long will it take?

Strip the drywall from above the door first, may be a wire in there. Standard framing of the door. Header on top, I have 2x6 walls also, so I make a triple header with 1/2" plywood between the 2x6's. and screw them into the king studs. It rests on top of jack studs. I throw in some PL premium on my king/jack studs , they never come apart! My door/window framing never moves! BTW, check out my album for patio door install, the header is a full 5 1/2" laminate of plywood.
