I have the MDF or particle board kitchen cabinets with the thin layer of vinyl that looks like wood on them. I want to paint them but have questions i need answered.. What type of paint do i need, water based, oil based, latex? also, what primer and does the primer have to match the paint type (latex, oil, water, etc..?). I know to clean with TSP but do i actually sand them even with this vinyl coating and if so, what grit sand paper? Thanks!

where is everyone? I have searched through some old posts on this but would really like Yanita's most up to date menu on primer and paint choice and sandpaper grade for the laminated cabinets. Want to do it right the first time!

Clean and do a light sanding, you don't want to go through the laminate. Since it is a kitchen I would go with an enamel to allow for cleaning. I would check with a paint store for their recommendations.

Home Depo has special paint for redoing cabinets (about $60/gal) and is definatly worth the money.
It has all the directions to do the job.

Not sure if you purchased the paint to redo your cabinets but I used rustoleum cabinet transformations in expresso for my bathroom vanity and it was easy and looks really nice. I have the paper faced vanity. Once I get my bathroom cleaned up I can post a picture. We have so much stuffy stacked everywhere from our reno in the main rooms.
