Our water heather is in our utility room behind the cheap wall board, My question is can I remove the cheap wall board and replace it with a mesh guard to keep thing from falling in on the water heater and just keep it open where air can circulate/flow through. I have a rack on rollers right next to the opening. My water heater is electric. This way I can see if it is leaking and I can access it a lot easier then screwing and unscrewing 18 million screws compared to 4 screws and dealing with that cheap wall board. Is there a real reason that the wall board has to be there.

Thank you

I personally have never heard of it being done, but I can't see why it wouldn't work.
