My mobile home is off grid, so we use solar and wind power for electricity. I've heard in the past of some device that you can plug a refrigerator into that prevents it from having a huge power surge when the compressor comes on. A friend of mine thought it might be called a soft starter, but I was unable to find anything on Amazon.com or the web with that name.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Would using such a device damage my components inside my refrigerator?

Thanks!

I am not personally aware of the device. I operate my cottage off of solar and would not heat or cool with solar power. Propane stoves and refrigerator are the best options and are always usable regardless of the availability of battery power.

There are power tools that use soft start, I don't know if it could be added to to a circuit for appliances or not. I would try googleing it.
