Should I use some sort of patch compound to fill this rotten wood section of the door frame, then sand it? Or should I buy a new piece of wood and use a nail gun to put it all back together? You guys have done this kind of stuff way more than I have, so that is why I seek your advice.

Thank you.

Personally, I would replace a door frame before splicing wood into the bad area. If the rest of the frame is still in pretty good shape, I would just use a wood rot repair epoxy, such as Elmer's Carpenter's Rotted Wood Repair, to stop the rot and fill with an epoxy wood putty. Sand and paint and you should have a permanent repair. There may be better epoxy products, but most come in $35 bottles.
