A-Coil from old furnace added to a new Miller Elec Furnace..

I think we have been led down a mis-leading path by an installation company. I hope my post makes a bit of sense to everyone.

We signed a contract "and" have already paid the company to install a new furnace. Part of the service was to keep the A-Coil from our Nordyne Gas furnace and use it with the new Miller Electric furnace (Model E3EB-015H)

The guy that took the order said that his installers would build a metal box around the A-Coil and sit the new furnace on top of that box.

The installers came, removed the old furnace and saved the A-Coil.
They told us it was better to sit the A-Coil on top of the new furnace and lay some filters over it.

They got the furnace working but because they had to sit it on top, the outside line from the Central Air unit was too short. They have to come back on Monday to connect the lines and recharge the outside unit.

Our old setup was exactly how this diagram is so in our mind, the new setup would need to be the same:

The way it is sitting now I honestly can't figure out how on earth they expect it to work. There is no way possible for any air to travel thru that coil since it isn't sitting over the duct work.
Here is a pic I just took of how they installed it. (not the best pic but it will give you an idea) Other than connecting the outside line, this is how they plan on leaving the A-Coil.

Something else that concerns me. I know the furnace was new, I watched them take the band off the box etc, however about 6 inches up on each side of the door there is damage (buckled/bent). It is as if it was dropped. They said they would bring back a new door, but I'm very worried that if it was dropped there could be problems down the road with this furnace.

When the buying decision first started out we were supposed to get a Coleman Electric Furnace, then the company said it would be best to go with this Miller. (Because they had to build the box and the Miller was shorter, but remember, they aren't planning on building a box now)

First they left the refrigerant line connections open to the air. BAD NEWS and furthermore they did not bother to tape them up. More bad news.
Mobile home units are usually designed as a blow thru not a draw thru style.

Tell them you want it exactly as listed on your agreement. You are paying for the job and you want it done correctly or they can give you your $$ back.

Now I am not going to say that the way it is set up will not work but the moisture laden air off of the coil and the water in case of a leak will damage the new furnace. Also the old coil is not designer to be installed the way they are doing it ant this could lead to condensate water problems.

The way it is installed IS correct. The A-Coil is only installed below Blower on Gas furnaces usually.


It is installed on top for electric furnaces usually.


The A-Coils are designed for upflow or downflow.


You can order an A-Coil cabinet enclosure with insulated walls for surrounding the A-Coil, but most do not.


Probably 75%+ are just as yours is now.


The main two things is to ensure is that the return air flow goes through the A-Coil and not around it. Be sure no possible bypass of return air exists.


Secondly, be sure a trap is installed in the drain line as close to A-Coil as possible.


IF your old drain pan is metal, a new plastic heavy duty drain pan is advised.



Now, with that said. They should have covered the refrig. lines as HVAC stated.


I say usually above because it can be installed below.


All of this should have been explained carefully and what you agreed upon, signed and paid for upheld and done.



They work fine the way it is installed and if maintained properly, continue to do so.


Also, I do not like the use of the two mesh filters laid across the a-coil.

I prefer a cut to fit Hogs Hair filter pressed into the top louvered door edges on backside to fit behind the louvers.

This keeps entire inner area clean as well as A-Coil.
