WE have a 1984 doublewide. We painted our walls a few years ago. It was the vinyl coated sheetrock type wall. It still can peel or loose a chunk if anything sticks to it or it gets hit by the vacuun, etc. What should we do as it needs repainting again? Also, can we use texture paint on these walls?

Vinyl is tough to make paint stick to, It must be clean and even then it may not stick well. I would stop by a paint store and get their advice.

Thanks Greg. Good idea. Last time I checked at the paint store there were young guys and they didn't know what to do. That was in the city. Maybe I"ll try some more local type store.

Any of you out there have any ideas? What have you tried that worked? Especially as all the house has been painted with latex over that vinyl stuff 12 years ago.

I think I'll try some small areas with some different things and see what happens. The closets don't work for that as they have a different material on the walls.

Do you remember if you primed before painting? After cleaning the walls, I use a bonding primer and let that dry at least overnight. It should "bond" with the vinyl, or at this point, what's already on your walls. Then the paint should adhere to the primer.

Thanks Trudi. I will look for a bonding primer then and no we didn't know enough 12 years ago to put primer on. Latex paint covered it well except for sheeting while putting it on at times. And we had help from friends and were desperate to get done and moved in at the time.
