What to do when there are no gaps?

Between the wallboards after removing the batten strips, there are only a few that need to be filled, so should I just put the mesh tape over the parts where two panels are flush to each other and continue with the mud/spackle process, or do I have to coat them with something before applying the tape just in case?
The flower that blooms in adversity is the rarest, and most beautiful of all.
