Unless you have a method of curing the conventional flue curred tobacco (ie tobacco barn), you will need to plant burely tobacco. Burely tobacco can be hung on a "clothes line" type contraption and will cure on it's own. However, flue cured tobacco is a whole different story. As far as chemicals on the tobacco, many farmers are now raising organic tobacco. Yeah, go figure on the purpose of that one. Anyway, soybean oil and other organic treatments can be used in substitution of the other traditional methods.

Well I cool My house by drawing air in from the shady end with a fan,helper fan in the middle and a fan on the other end to expel air. if I had tobacco hanging in the end room that expels air then it wouldn't permeate the house and it would have constant draft.

If I do go ahead and try to shade skirting with it I might end up with more than I can dry in the room. Maybe I should grow some burley and another variety too so I have options. I have some more research to do and never really had a green thumb,this dual purpose use tho intrigues Me. If it works well,then I have to be able to cut it up suitable for cigs,,,more research.

I only need enough to last till the next harvest is dry,maybe if there is a surplus I can soak the extra and make anti-insect spray for organic gardeners,,heh heh,never know. I know I can't legally sell the surplus as smoking material but I bet I can trade it as long as no cash changes hands. Also maybe just grind it up and make insect repellant mulch,who knows?

I ordered enough tobacco seeds to do the entire south side of My singlewide and wrap around the west end too,that's planting them 2'-3' apart. Actually I ordered 3 different types of cig tobacco. I think I have an old farmer that will come and till the line for Me,then I'll shovel in a little cow manure,add some ashes and maybe something to up the potassium level too and ask Him to use the tiller to mix that ing,,oh,,and a little sand helps I guess,,,all of that after the frost is out of the ground of course.

The 1st trick for Me will be to get the starting indoor system down. I want to geminate all 4 packs(about 200 seeds),,transplant the healthiest here till My area is full,,then take the rest of the seedlings to a friends farm and see if He wants to try growing them too.

The suggested mix for starting tobacco seeds is 1/2 potting soil and 1/2 peat humus. I just need to get a plan on that..Paper cups that can be torn off at transplant time,or,some other method. I also thought of trays with some sort of grid separation but dunno quite how to do that yet. Keep them moist and warm in 1/2" deep dibbles but not covered with soil till the roots burrow.

then as they grow(hopefully)I might water with light mix of slurry after they get bigger,not sure on that one either.

Brewing beer sounds cool. I have part of a piecemeal kit for making mead,been thinkin on that for quite a while now. I seem to be more commited to growing tobacco at the moment but making a semi-sweet Mead sounds wayyyy good too.

Another crosspost; From,"do You smoke";

Amendment #2;; The VA Gold has finally started to germinate! I see only 4 that are obvious tho,must be a slow starter. I doubt I will put 2 varieties in 1 tray again.

With 3 varieties total I will put 1 of each in a remote place to let it flower and go to seed for next year,it seems that helps to aclimate plants and next year's will be better.

I'm getting low on time to do seedlings,they need time inside,hardenning off, and need to be 6" tall(give or take)to transplant. Since the cells in the flats are so small I may use them for something else and get some big/cheap picnic glasses for the rest that I want to keep,then,sow the other seeds on top of a 16"x8' box to give to friends..This weekend is devoted to "green thumbin",,preparing flats,preparing makeshift seedling box,sowing seed,and,maybe getting some veggie seed so try tomatoes and such.Was gonna wait till next year for veggies but now I "got the fever"!

There will be a gap between the tobacco row and the skirting,,,am considering black plastic bact there to kill the grass and weeds to minimize tending cause I will be on the road a little this summer. The plastic will also channel some water to the garden row I think.

Should I move this post to a different section like landscaping?

Amendment # 3;;The Virginia Gold side of flat 1 has over 20 seedlings now,,I'm happy as a man can get!,,and,,hoping for more VA Gold! I want to keep plenty of the Golden Seal Special and the VA Gold as I can,then some TA 16 Burley too. The rest of the TA 16 can got to friends. I want the different kinds here so I can experiment with blends of shredded tobacco,,,that is,,*if* the whole project comes to fruition..
