Hey Gals!
Sorry it's taken me so long to get back, I've been a busy bee! Yes, we used laminate in the living room. The brand is Vitality in honey oak. I LOVE IT! I like it because it looks like a bunch of small boards when really they are about 7 1/2 inches wide. As for the kitchen we used vinyl tile. The brand is Cryntel and the color is Sage. It turned out REALLY well. I am very happy with it! Next on our agenda is laying the same laminate in our master bedroom and putting the same vinyl tiles in the bathrooms. We currently have carpet in our bathrooms (why someone would put carpet in a bathroom is beyond me!) but when our toliet flooded we had rip the carpet out and lucky us! There was linoleum under there! Those vinyl tiles take to it GREAT! We also decided to paint the exterior which I am SOOOO NERVOUS about!! We are thinking of trading it in and getting either a 16x80 or a small double wide in early March/April because we are planning on a baby next year! That means we need MORE room! But the more I do to this home the less I want to leave it! We have put a lot of work into it in the last year and it will be paid for next year. Only because we got a GREAT deal on it from my aunt!! :D My laundry room is almost finished and I will post some pics of all of the rooms when I get them done! THANKS SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR RESPONSES!!

Hi Georgie,

That's exactly what I am going to do to our mobile home - put down laminate in lr, hall and all 3 bedrooms, and self-stick tiles in both bathrooms, but I'm unsure about it in kitchen. Not sure if the self-stick would be durable enough in my kitchen.

We had our mh built for us in 1994, and I had carpet put in our bathroom. Why? I have no idea, but I hate it! Sooooo ready to rip that stuff out!

Good luck on the baby plans - we have a 16x80, 3bedroom, 2bath and it's just big enough for us 3 (we have a 14-year-old). Not sure if I'd be feeling cramped with more than 1 child, though. And I kind of wish we had gone with a double-wide, but oh well, we'll make do.

Hi Robin,

Just wanted to let you know that although it has been done, and successfully sometimes, we don't recommend self stick tiles in a bathroom. There are some real pretty tile looks in full sheet vinyl.

Bathrooms being considered a wet area, tiles do no not offer real good protection to your sub floors.

Welcome to the site and look forward to your contributions!

Layout looks very much like ours. We removed the upper cabinets from the peninsula too. Nice job! I like the "beams" on the cathedral ceiling.

Yanita, one of my bathrooms has vinyl sheet in it. Do you think the vinyl tiles would be okay over this? We have a 14-year-old who is pretty much the only one who uses this bathroom, and she doesn't do alot of "splashing"! LOL I can hardly even get her to take a bath, much less to enjoy it!

My other bathroom, on the other hand, as I said before, only has carpet. I'm just not sure what to do about this. I see where you are coming from, and I can't afford to do something, then have to rip it out and replace it if it gets wet. That was my whole point to the tiles, because they are cheaper and I can do that myself, as I can afford it, whereas with vinyl sheet I will have to hire that done.

Thanks for the advice - it is definitely something to consider before I go shopping for new flooring!

Hi Robin,

That is the only way we recommend self stick tiles over existing vinyl.

You will need to make sure that the existing vinyl is in good shape, no holes or tears, or at least be able to repair them. If the existing vinyl has a textured pattern, you really should use a floor leveling compound to smooth it out.

Now, the quality of the tile is an absolute must, dollar store or other cheap tile just does not adhere properly. I personally like Novalis. This is sold at Lowe's and possibly other big box stores. Shouldn't cost much to do a bathroom.

I am going to split this topic as it is not about the original post.

If you need further help holler...

Yanita,

Thanks for replying. I didn't mean to monopolize the conversation from the o.p.

Do you think in my bathroom that has carpet, I could get some remnants of vinyl sheet and put down in front of the shower and the bathtub, the places where the floor is most likely to get wet, and then put the vinyl tiles down? I really, really want to go with the tile! Can you tell???

Thanks for the advice about the floor leveling compound. Doesn't sound too difficult.

I had already planned on the Novalis, since I've been reading on here about what everybody recommends. It may cost more, but it would be worth it.

Hey again,

No problem with the questions, I tried to separate some of the post but I didn't do well.

Anyways... For your bathroom with the carpet  I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it is possible this bathroom will require more than tile.

You said, I think that this toilet has overflowed..well that and just everyday use of a tub/shower I can almost bet that there are some soft/rotten spots where the tub unit front apron meets the wall and floor. Hopefully I am wrong, but you will see when the carpet comes up!

But to answer your question, yes, that's what I was thinking, you can get remnants at Lowes and other big box stores and maybe even at a local Habitat for Humanity store. Again, prep is what will determine how good your job looks.

Pull off the bases boards, and any trim around the base of the vanity, and remove the toilet.

Read all the instructions on the box prior to starting your project. Some tiles have a certain placement direction. If you want a pro look find the very center of your room, and start your placement from there, it will tell you this on the box.
Good luck,

Yanita

Hi,

That must have been somebody else with the overflowing toilet. Thankfully, we've never had that happen! But you're probably right about the soft spots - hubby has a rug he puts in front of his shower before he gets in, but I'm sure that rug hasn't caught all the water. I'm so anxious to pull that carpet up and see what we have. I think it will work, with good prep. Thanks!

That was my toilet that over flowed! lol NOT FUN! But we got lucky we had linoleum under our carpet when we ripped it up. We are going to use the same tiles we have in our kitchen in our bathroom. We've had ours down about a month and they are doing great. We are very happy with them.

LOL, sorry Georgie,

Got alot going on, sometimes it's hard to concentrate! I remember those pics, they look really good.

Others may disagree, and that is fine, BUT, the only way I personally agree with self stick tiles, regardless of brand and quality is if there is full sheet vinyl underneath.

Also, it is possible that you still might have problems with them staying stuck...alot of moisture, humidity and water in the bathroom. I personally have never used self stick tiles in a bathroom, although I did do a kitchen without any problems.

If installing in the bathroom I recommend that you always have a bath mat ready to use when exiting the shower/tub, and then hang it over the side of the tub when done, so as not to keep moisture next to the tiles. Also run your exhaust fan at least one hour after showering/bathing.

After you ladies are done with your bathrooms, please post us some before and after pics! :D

JMO,

Yanita
