One day you might be able to visit Mickey Mouse in Florida .... and casinos too.

Recent news.

The Florida Homeowners Insurance Problem
A simple solution exists to our problem of upward-spiraling high cost of homeowners insurance and property taxes in the State of Florida. May I suggest that a state-wide, constitution-protected Trust Fund be created, overseen by the state government but managed privately.
From the Trust would be paid:
1) Catastrophic hurricane property damage. The Trust would be responsible for fifty (50) percent of the coverage amount and private insurance would be responsible for the other fifty (50) percent. This would result in much lower insurance rates.
2) Property tax relief. The relief amount paid to each county would be based on the counties’ population and prior year’s catastrophic fund payout.
Once the Trust is established and deemed a success, it could be expanded by popular vote to bolster Florida teachers’ salaries.
The answer to our dilemma is this… let’s invite the adult gaming industry (Vegas-style casinos) into Florida and collect twelve (12) to fifteen (15) percent revenue from them to fund the Trust. The revenue amount collected will only increase as baby boomers retire to Florida.
Additional benefits of this plan would be:
1) Elimination of Citizens Insurance, as private insurance companies would once again be willing to write policies here.
2) Employment of thousands of Floridians in the casinos and casino hotels. The hotel revenue alone would boost our state’s budget.
3) Increased tourism as people enjoyed the beaches, family entertainment, and of course, now the adult gaming.
The day has come when Florida citizens can no longer afford to reject the financial support the state would receive from the adult gaming industry. It’s a well-known fact that a very large number of Floridians support other states’ casinos and their governments. Let’s wake up, be smart, and keep all that money here in Florida and benefit from it. Hopefully, we can all recognize the magnitude of our dire situation and be intelligent enough to know that we must take action. end of report

Hi Harry,

Florida has been pushing casino style gaming since I can remember! It's always been voted down in the past.

But, since gaming has opened up around the country and pulled many states out of the hole, so to speak, it might have a chance this time! The rest of the country, outside of Nevada, now has a 25 year plus track record. This is really hard for me to say, but other states have benefited from gaming. At the same time, it's hit us in Northern Nevada really hard. Our incomes haven't gone anywhere in 20 years. Hubby's still in that business. I was raised in it and spent 22 years in management there.

Look at it this way, you can visit Disneyland and drive a bit further to a casino in Cali. It's already been done! California just passed a bill to allow even more slot machines in every casino. The only thing that Nevada has on the rest of gaming is the legal sports books and crap games. Not all states allow the dice games at this time, but that will also change with time. Sports betting will follow!

Thank goodness Warren is looking at retiring soon LOL! That business isn't anything what it used to be.

Yep

We have plenty of gambling now with casino boats, cruise ships, Native Indian casinos, dog tracks, horse tracks and the lottery…..but nothing compares to Vegas.

Yep, I know that very well! We've got many very close friends working out of Cape Canaveral on the boats. Most of the folks running them taught me when I was coming up, and some I taught!

Nothing now, will ever compete with Vegas. Even in Northern Nevada we can't even try to compete anymore! Reno was the huge gaming area in the 40's though the 60's. But things really changed in the 70's and no one will ever keep up with Vegas!

But, since we're looking at retirement, it's not a big deal to us. We have so much more to offer in Northern Nevada as far as recreation outside of casinos! We're happy campers! Northern Nevada will always have a few good hotels casinos, but we gave up on the glitz long ago. We're much more proud of our outdoor recreation!
