I just read online that we will have to choose between the two and that one won't play the other. That just sucks. What about my huge selection of DVD's I have now. What info do any of you have about it. You think they will come up with something that will do the blu-ray/HD that can also play all my regular DVD's in the future.

VHS or Beta?...remember that one...turns out Beta was better, used in broadcasting companies...VHS was marketed better though.

Yeah I remember. I did the VHS cause the tapes they sold would tape longer. Remember getting my first one at Sears. Bet it weighed 20 pounds. We had also got one of those huge satelitte dishes and everything you could pick up out there was free. That didn't last too long though.

ya, and those old 20 pound machines lasted forever. Nothing like real metal parts etc. lol

Fellas, I've still got my first RCA VHS machine, still works. The first 120 VHS tape I bought cost $37.

As for the new formats only time will tell. Anyone remember the library scene in The Time Machine and the "Talking" rings?

It seems like change is being forced on us weather or not we like it, in 2009 ALL television signals are supposed to be changed to digital. No more analog signals, so, no more TV antennas. you will be forced to cable or Satellite. Just gotta love progress. Greg

Don't worry about it, most people are ignoring it. DVD is still the standard. I wouldn't upgrade if I where you.

I just built an HTPC and I'm looking at upgrading my 720p 42 to a 60 1080p and a friend asked me if I put blu-ray in my HTPC and I was like, why?

There are talks that the format war might end, with a compromise. There differences between the formats are not like the beta vhs days.

It's not being forced on us, so much as regulars DVDs are still standard.

Any player that is progressive scan still offers the same quality of digital viewing. Dont' believe the hype, do some research.

I finally got back into the AV industry too.

Both the Blue-ray and the Hd players will play regular dvd's without a problem. I just bought a 40 inch Sony lcd unit and upgraded my dvd player with a panasonic dvd recorder/player that up-converts to 1080i. The picture is beautiful. No need to get the hd or blue-ray right now. There are a few units on the market that will play both formats but are way to expensive. Just stay with a good up-convertiing dvd player and you can't go wrong.

Thanks guys for answering my question. I was just concerned about all the DVD's I've bought in the past. If they don't make some kind of compromise for their new players to play the old DVD's it would, I think, hurt their business. We've got a small fortune in movies here. It's still more convenient and cheaper to buy movies than go to one, especially since we can't resist the popcorn and cherry coke.

I wasn't that smart! Yeah, I bought the old VHS recorder in 1982! It was top of the line back them. I decided then to create a Disney library for my oldest son, he's 34 now LOL! I kept that up through the 80's into the mid 90's. That included the younger sons interests and the new disney films. Yep, about 10 years ago I got the message.. it wasn't going to last...duh!

My thought was that I could play these movies for my grandkids LOL! No grandkids yet. I have every movie that Disney produced on VHS until 1995. I gave up after that!

Someone want to buy to old buy the old the VHS library LOL!

I've learned that technology moves faster than I do. But yeah, if you've got yours on DVD, you should be good for a few years!

Not even sure I remember how to use my VHS. Still have it though. I sold all of our Disney VHS movies at our garage sale. One guy bought them all for ten bucks each. That was a money day for me. Don't miss those big tapes.

My hubby swears on blue-ray. I don't know why. We have a sixty-two inch Toshiba, and I don't need a better pic than that. I can see every flaw on everyone with that screen.

Random, but the Beta actually had higher quality video, however pornos in the back of the video rental place, were often recorded on VHS becuase it was cheaper and VHS supported a longer play time. Believe it or not, PORN is the reason VHS won.
