I was just wondering, in the near future I'll probably replace my roof with a metal roof (whenever I have too, and funds can be afforded). Whats the thoughts of skylights installed during the new roof process.

I have a great room/living room in my manufactured home that have the high pitched ceiling (rafter looking things)

I just wondered what everyone thought........as well as a brand of skylights and size

I have a velux installed in the original metal roof with very few problems over the 17 years that I have had it. I have had a few small leaks develop the last couple of years.
The problem that I could see if you were to install one on a ribbed metal roof may be getting it sealed. Perhaps JD or others could comment on this. Greg

Personally I am not a big fan of skylights. They always seem to leak at some point. I have also seen many pieces of furniture and floors damaged from the suns rays. Also the homes I have been in where ever the lights are that room always seems sooo much hotter than the other areas, but I live in the south. Now there are many that have these successfully, hopefully you will be one.

I agree with both Greg and Yanita on all counts. Every hole in your roof is a possible roof leak and sky lights lead the pack in roof penetrations that cause leaks. That does not mean they all leak or that your skylights will leak, but I would not like the odds on a metal panel roof. Here in my area where we have brutal summers, large skylights heat up the house a lot.

What about tube skylights?

I've seen a few a typical newer homes (not mobile homes though) do skylights within the roof itself...really contemporary. These are within the metal roof and they use a clear roof instead of the colored (can't even see it from the outside- so no one knows they have a skylight- unless you are inside the house).

So when I recenlty did a re-roof with the corrugated roof panels from Lowes, I took this idea. But now I'm really having to think outside the box...The roof is complete and from the outside- you cannot tell I have skylights. I used silver corrugated roofing panels and then clear over the skylight cutouts.
I must buy interior skylights aka low e glass/ or other material that doesn't allow sun's rays to cause damage, allow heat in winter to escape upwards, etc.
But I may have to build it...but hopefully I can buy it. I'll come back to this post, if it's not locked, and let you know what I come up with.

Hi,

I have entertained the idea of the tube lights. You only get the light and not the damaging rays, the light bounces around in the tube, or at least that is how it was explained to me. Let us know if you do this, myself and maybe others would be interested in hearing the results.
