Hi

I have some 3" deck screws that are rusting and need to be replaced. Any suggestions on what to replace them with?

I have had excellent luck with the EverShield brand exterior screws. They are a true gray in color. They last a lot longer than double-dipped galvanized.

I tried using the stainless steel screws before, but they are so soft that the heads keep twisting off. I ended up having to pre-drill and countersink each screw. I had to stand on the board and be real careful not to go past the countersink hole (by much anyways) and I wasn't real happy with not being able to really cinch the boards down with just the screw. This was replacing deck boards into old wood framing, so that might have had a lot to do with it.

If your screws go into the newer (5-6 years ago) pressure treated wood, they will rust a lot quicker than the old type of PT.

Hi

The decking is 2" x 6". I have been thinking of going with 5/4 x 6".

Have you used the 5/4 on 16" centers? It would be pressure treated Southern Pine.

Hi Harry,

Nope never used a 5/4 deck board. You guys hoard all of that wonderful Southern Yellow Pine. We would have order it from a specialty shop and say goodbye to common sense when paying for it.

You could always use Brass, but you will need to predrill the holes first. Greg

5/4 decking will be fine
That's what we use in the Chicago area
You live near the ocean?
Then I would use stainless steel screws to secure the deckingImage

Hi

10-4

I live near the Gulfof Mexico.

At this point I am thinking of:

#8 2 1/2" 316 SS square drive with type 17 point.

I will predrill pilot holes.

I would stay with 2X6 deck boards, stronger and last longer IMHO.

Take care and best wishes,
Robert

LOL 10-4 on the members.

I'm down to 298lbs.

My sisters boy is a biscuit away from 500.

2x6 on 16" centers I'm sure. Here's the frame before the joists were put in.

Finished deck approx 2/2006.
