Problem with our new vinyl floor...

Well, actually the problem is my dear hubby. He did not listen when I told him the guy that sold me the floor advised that we glue the floor down. We replaced the vinyl floor in a small bathroom, took the old sheet vinyl floor up, which was not glued down, and put down new sheet vinyl. I even bought the glue, but he said since the room was so small, and since the old floor was not glued down, it would be okay.

Why, oh why, does it always have to be a battle?! So now, we have moved the vanity with new marble top and sink in, put the commode back in, and put a new linen cabinet in. And...when the central heat comes on, my new floor rises about 8 inches from all the air going under it. Great. Now what? We haven't put down the baseboards yet, but I held it to the wall, and it doesn't help any.

I knew it would be like this. My husband, who knows NOTHING about carpentry, thinks he knows more than me. And I know if we don't find a simple solution, he's taking everything out except the commode and glueing down the floor over the Christmas holiday. And if he had just done it right in the first place, he wouldn't be faced with that.

Does anybody have any advice? I swear, I'm not sure my marriage will survive any more projects, and this was out first room to do!

LOL, and don't despair.

I personally would not remove a thing from the bathroom. Simply remove the register cover, apply glue under the vinyl stick down, replace cover and you should be good to go.

I personally I am not a fan of gluing down vinyl, should you have a leak and generally you will sooner or latter, removing that vinyl (glued) is a real PITA.

EVERY time we have replaced vinyl in a home we allow the vinyl to settle into place before installing vanity, shower, commode etc. After a day or 2 install everything and the baseboards, all is well.

I am sure others will have opinions,

Yanita

So what you're saying is, we can glue down the floor around the vent, because that's where the air is coming in, right? Marvelous!

Thank you for replying - I'm sure that will work and take care of the problem! I just couldn't stand to see the floor "blow up" every time the heater came on! It looks like a balloon!! LOL

Thanks again, and I hope you have a very Merry Christmas!!!

Hi,

Yup, that is what I am saying, it is exactly what we did here. The previous owner installed vinyl in bathrooms and kitchen, not glued down (woo hoo). I simply glued the vinyl to the floor around the vent. Sure will make changing the vinyl out easier when we renovate those 2 rooms!

Merry Christmas to you and yours...oh yeah, might want to consider getting your Hubby the Mobile Home Repair Manual for Christmas. It is great to have when renovating/repairing our homes. Written in generic terms for all mobiles. It can be found in our on line store in the BOOKS/PARTS link above.

Merry Christmas,

Yanita

Yep, we wanted to check out our subfloor, make sure we hadn't had any leaks, so that's why we pulled the old floor up. It was so easy, since it wasn't glued down!

I might order the book, but for myself, not for him! He doesn't read - he can, he just won't! Go figure!! But I'm in it for the long haul, he is not going to deter me, with his stubbornness and hard-headedness, from these home improvement projects. I already love the way the bathroom is looking, it looks so much better. I will upload pictures when I'm done with the room. Next is laminate in our hall and living room - I'm sure he and I will have loads of fun!

LOL

Hi Robin,

That's another great thing about this book, lots of easy to follow pics for the gents and words for the women!

Be sure to create your personal album and upload your pics there also if you would like, this way they do not get lost in post....

Happy Holidays,

Yanita

LOL

Hubby used silicone to bond the floor around the vent, and it worked beautifully! Thanks Yanita for your advice. And I'm not sure if he would read the book - really, he NEVER reads - but I might get it for me!!!

Buy the book and leave it in the bathroom.
Men think that is their office and they like to read in there.
