Screeching bathroom fans....

I have a 1975 home with two bathrooms. In both there is a ceiling fan. Both of them have begun to screech sometimes when I turn them on. The only thing I've done to them (I've been here 15 years) over the years has been to remove the cover, clean the dust out, and use WD40 on them. It stops the screeching for a while, which is probably years!

I'd like to know if this is just a "bandage," and that I'm not really fixing anything. Perhaps I need to get my handyman to install two new fans instead.

Thanks for any advice, as usual. (This is an invaluable site!)

Most fan motors use bronze bushings, the do require lubrication. If the motors & fans work fine other than the noise I would just lubricate them. 3 in one oil may be a better choice than WD40.

Thanks, Greg. That makes a lot of sense and also sounds like 3 in 1 oil would cost me a lot less than new fans and their mechanisms!
