I am having a new gas mobile home water heater put in . My gas company has agreed but they claim the direct vent tank model or even the atmospheric with bottom opening for air intake (note it is NOT tankless) must be vented thru the roof and not the side of the home. No reason why, maybe due to the sealed combustion chamber and draft issues. I want to be sure they seal the area around my expensive rubber roof correctly. My concern is they may lay down a metal plate with the round flue opening and not use the correct sealant method and maybe use regular tar. Will that eat the rubber roof? What should they be using to seal out rain water?
Thanks

Update. Now the gas company says they will not cut the hole in the roof but still charge $3300.00 for installation! Outrageous. Water heater is less than $900.00
I cant take this! Reason I have to go to gas is only 60 amp service. Not enough for new a/c etc.

Tar will eat the rubber EPDM/TPO roofing.
Find a supplier or contractor that has the roof jack or find a another installer.
Do you need a new furnace and wtr heater?
Have a electrician do a load calc--may be you can go elec on wtr heater.
