Strapping on roof

I think I have the picture this time. I can understand the post about "maybe it's keeping the roof together" and that sort of makes sense in this picture but what would it be keeping together on the one that runs the other way? Humm, more thought is needed on this!

Who knows what they do. When I had my shingled roof replaced, I found that the factory apparently felt they had too large a gap at the peak, so they bridged it with a 3 foot chunk of vinyl siding corner trim.
