Full Kitchen Remodel Progress

Hi Guys ..

We're still plugging away at an entire mobile home remodel. Lately, we've been making a lot of progress on the kitchen.

Originally, it looked like this:

Image

We tore the entire room down to the studs, added new insulation, and hung new drywall. I built bases for new Ikea cabinets from 2x4's, and layed down laminate flooring that carries over into the living/dining area.

Cabinet base:

2 cabinets installed and 1/2 of the Ikea butcher block countertop:

Ceramic sink (also from Ikea):

I had the upper cabinets hung, but we were having a problem with German cockroaches getting behind them, so I took them back down for now. Part of this remodel includes sealing EVERY little nook and cranny so no bugs can get in. We set of bug bombs a few weeks ago, which took care of about 80% of the problem, but with lots of cracks and crevices open they keep finding a way back in. Once everything is sealed, we'll set of some bug bombs again.

This isn't really part of the kitchen, but at the end of the hall that runs from the kitchen was a small closet. The doorway was tiny, and there was no actual door. I reframed the closet and installed a new 30 x 80 mirrored bi-fold door. The closet is also about 6" deeper and wider than it was previously, so we'll be able to store more things.

Before (already removed the old drywall from around the door):

Looking good. I like that sink and faucet. Is that fluorescent light under the sink just a work light?

yes .. just a work light i was using to check for leaks. I ended up with an electrical outlet inside the cabinet to the left of the sink, so I may end up putting some lights in there in the future.

I think I can honestly say that I don't miss doing major jobs like yours. When I did our daughters it seemed like I just kept finding more that that needed to be fixed. It was a long 6 months, But I did know that everything was done right.

It IS very rewarding when you can look back at it, I'm sure you will have the same feeling when you are done.

Try some Combat gel for the roaches: it comes in a large syringe. Put in out of the way nooks & crannies: behind socket plates, floor to wall joints inside cabinets, behind stove, etc. Looks good.

Greg .. I'll be glad when it's over. And you're right .. in order to do 1 thing, you need to fix 3 related things first.

Steve .. the Combat gel works great. We've been using it for a while, and do find dead bugs around where we put it. When I put the new cabinets in, I made sure to seal EVERY little seam and crack I could find. Once the baseboards go in, we'll set off another series of bug bombs and hopefully that will take care of the issue.

Looking good, As for the bugs if you still see one there could still be hundreds. Make sure to also bomb the underneath of your home. Those guys will be in the belly and just about every other place. I have seen where the neighbor had them and the place I was working on could not get rid of them until they offered to pay for the neighbors pest control to get rid of them.

I like the countertops. I was planning on doing that when I get to gutting the kitchen. Menards has cheap 2x that's deep enough for countertops and cabinets. I began building cabinets awhile ago out of 1x4 pine but got carried away to more important projects in the house.

We also have the floating T&G laminate flooring. It's been in for about 18 years. It's moved apart from floor movement and will eventually get replaced in the kitchen.
