My hot water heater quit giving hot water/lukewarm at best. This morning I discovered a leak in the hot water line which that dreaded gray pipe. How do I fix it?

For a "temporay quick fix" you can wrap a piece of inner tube around the leak and put a hose clamp or two on it. Also Lowes sells clamps for such leaks-you just have to know your pipe diameter.

Many hardware stores have compression unions that you could use as a repair. Greg

I have inspected the leak area and there is 2-3 inches of some plumber's putty or goop over the leaking area. Until I take it off, I won't be able to tell if it is a coupling or a joint. We are finally getting some warmer weather where I can tackle this and not freeze to death. It looks like it has been leaking for some time maybe months. Good grief!
