a/c noise

the outside a/c unit that is close to the living room wall produces noise through the return vent. Is there a way to reduce the noise ? The return vent was installed in the living room and seems like all the sound from the unit gathers there, it's not really so much the air noise as noise from the unit itself. I have heard of some type of duct silencer ?
