Nordyne Mod. E1EH-015HA split unit/eliminate cooling?

This unit has been disconnected for about 8 years. Can the furnace only be used? with the outside unit removed? Don't really know how it could have worked with the lever temp control missing from the thermostat. Putting in new one, same as original.
