Nordyne Telescoping Roof Jack

Quick question:
Is is acceptable to "cut" (professionally at machine shop), a Nordyne telescoping roof jack? The one that was supplied with the furnace is way to long even in the fully closed position. (Cannot exchange...too much time has elapsed). If cut cleanly and evenly at the furnace side, it seems like it would be fine. Any thoughts?
