Re: My rim joist repair

Another question...

Q: How to join the new rim joist piece (filler piece) with the existing (the single outer rim joist)?

Would mending plates be of any value? With 24" or so of overlap with a sister board I'm not thinking that there's going to be any concerns over possible movement.

Re: My rim joist repair

OK... I find that there IS a long enough 2x6 available. I need roughly 15' and the local big box store has 16' boards. A full board for replacing the original joist section would be roughly 10'. Replacing it as one whole piece would mean not having to mess with removing that splicing block (under th...

Re: My rim joist repair

Here a picture that attempts to show the entirety of the rim joist area in question (sorry for the odd angle- I was in a hurry to snap it). RimJoistResized.jpg There are two bad spots combining to about 92". They are separated by 33" of good material. Here is a picture of the REALLY bad sp...

My rim joist repair

As I have never done anything like this before I will be asking for guidance. I'll attempt to document things in this thread such that someone else can get a, hopefully, full picture of how to tackle one of these jobs. Background Purchased house about 10 years ago. At that time it had a deck (and st...

Re: Deck footing and porch design questions

Greg, I was going to take another guess but realized that I might once again fail to comprehend what you're suggesting. Any chance you could point me at an example, or perhaps scribble something down and insert here as a picture?

Attaching triple 2x6 floor joist to rim joist

I have [only one instance of] tripled up 2x6 floor joists coming out to my rim joist that I'll need to attach to a new rim joist section: not sure why there are 3; I think that it was from someone else's repair work. Can I just end nail from the new sister rim joist section? If so, what size nails? ...

Re: Deck footing and porch design questions

Greg, are you talking about changing the house's roof pitch? Current pitch is about the minimum that it can be, in which case I really cannot make it any less/more shallow.

The deck width will be about 25' and the porch's width will be about 15'.

Re: Deck footing and porch design questions

Greg, no, not going to try and cover the entire deck. I'd already set up sight lines on the "wings" and found that the existing roof line would drop too much if I extended out to the outside of the deck (except the gabled/dormer section). I have not seen/heard of anyone mating up (in a flo...

Re: Bathroom exhaust fan

" it looks like quite a job to get electric there" Could you elaborate as to why you believe this to be the case? In case you had not already considered it, you can surface-mount an electrical raceway/conduit. Eliminates cutting and snaking wiring inside walls. But, really, with drills and...

Deck footing and porch design questions

I am working up some plans for a new deck (with porch). I have a question on footings and on the general design of a porch. Regarding footings, I'm wondering whether I need to change to having all posts resting on concrete piers (which are sunk about 2' [frost line is 12" to 18" here]) or ...

Code I referred to is from WA State, based on International code. It's not HUD, but I cannot see how physics could be different between standard home construction and HUD stuff.

Re: Yet Anothet skirting question

Ah, same climate as I am in! I heat with wood, in which case it's a little hard to identify my actual energy consumption. I estimate about 5 cords of alder and maple (obtained from my property) per heating season: this from October through April. This keeps my 1377 sq-ft house more than warm. I'd lo...

Re: What to do about rats..

You do NOT need a regular service if you get things sealed up properly. I am currently addressing a rodent issue at my place. It's been on my TODO list for a while (higher priorities). I am completely re-doing my skirting (will be using metal roofing material [chew proof!]). It costs, yes, but once ...

Re: Kicking the skirting venting dead-horse, again

As I was researching for some unrelated construction activities I ran across my county's code covering ventilation and this is what is says: R408.1 Ventilation. The under-floor space between the bottom of the floor joists and the earth under any building (except space occupied by a basement) shall h...
