Re: outward opening door

Maybe something like this would work as well...

One of the reviewers said you can get alarms at Dollar Tree; might be worth a look.

Re: Rafter repair

It appears to me that you have horizontal purlins over the trusses that the metal roof is attached to without a roof deck. Is that right? Since both the top and bottom truss cords have been compromised, I suggest against running the jack posts up to press them flush again. More damage will probably ...

Sounds like you have either a bad t-stat or bad sequencer(s). Sequencer would be my choice.

Re: intertherm e3eb-015h question

I blocked off our outside vent like DaleM mentioned on our E3EB unit. Basically unhooked the duct, taped over the hole, then hooked the duct back up. Do you have ceiling or floor vents? Have you tried removing the vent covers in that room to see if that helps? Throttling them down in the other room ...

Re: Add an air return

This could work. Not only to pull more warm air, but to create negative pressure on that end of the house, thereby accommodating more supply air to feed there. What I would check beforehand though are obstructions in the supply duct. Or simply throttle down the good end to try and force more to the ...

Re: Poorly Done Exterior Walls - Need Help

I would probably choose the 6" width. The 4" could be used for steps 7 & 8 above, but then you'd have to lap several layers to create the sill pan.

Re: Poorly Done Exterior Walls - Need Help

I would simply supplement the sill plate for flashing membrane. The intent is to have the water flow down onto overlapping flashing pieces. Weather resistive barrier = Tyvek or equivalent My installation procedure would be like this... 1. Tyvek the whole wall (after sheathing of course). Wrap into t...

Re: Poorly Done Exterior Walls - Need Help

My suggestion would be to use a self-adhered flashing membrane like 'Grace Vycor Butyl'.

Here is an installation procedure - http://www.na.graceconstruction.com/tem ... tml&did=26

Re: City water and well water--running new plumbing

My suggestion would be to home-run the PEX from each fixture to a common location. This would give the opportunity to install manifolds that would allow you to divide the apartments and/or the city & well into zones for serviceability. And also be able to switch the well fixtures over to the cit...

Re: belly Insulation

Unfortunately, that's how they insulate these floors from the factory. If you can press some R-11 un-faced insulation in there under the joists parallel with the pipes, then I would take the opportunity and apply some between each joist as well. About half of my house now has pipe insulation and bat...

Re: Painting block foundation

Depending on how porous the block still is may determine the approach. If there are still open pores, then I would use a thick paint designated for concrete foundation walls. Otherwise any good exterior latex paint should work fine. Best is very subjective and opinionative.

Re: trimming edge of fiber glass entry door?

Did you use shims to install the jamb on the strike side? It's possible that you snugged them up just a tad too much. If only one portion of the door is hitting, you may need to pull the casing and use less shim there. Also, depending on the reveal around the jamb/stop where the weatherstripping is ...

Re: finish bottom framing of screen porch

Since you describe this as a screen porch, this suggests that it's still exposed to the elements one way or another. I recommend you finish this with exterior materials (like vinyl siding) coordinating with the outside of your home, as you will have the best durability and least maintenance requirem...

Re: Exterior Door Sweeps

Door sweeps come in several varieties. 2 popular replacement kinds that work for just about any door are either a channel that screws to the very bottom of the door, or a blade that is applied to the bottom face. Both can be cut to fit. The channel type usually accompanies an adjustable height thres...
