Re: Major remodel to save money on rent. Need advice!

IF you get lucky and things fall into place, and IF you live there 10 years, you MIGHT end up with a "break even" proposition. If you're young, healthy, and VERY ambitious, go for it. But be advised: At best it will be a "break even" proposition. You may have the satisfaction of ...

Re: Gutters. Seamed or Seamless?

I just had a 54' straight run with downspouts on both ends put on my garage. The garage is old and the roof is not straight or level. I went with seamless and professional installers, and they did a GREAT job. $300 was a bit high on paper, but on the garage it was worth every penny. https://scontent...

Re: The number of down spouts for a rain gutter

You might also check the size of the guttering itself - they make a couple of different sized that you can use depending on the length of the run. Bigger gutters can move more water efficiently. I'm in the process of getting a gutter installed on one side of my garage - water coming off the roof las...

Re: Gorilla insulated skirting

That "Gorilla" insulated skirting is the stuff I used 3 years ago when we moved our single wide to central Indiana. Down this way it's called Rapid Wall skirting - here's a link if you want to compare prices and products... http://rustiquerapidwall.com/ I LOVE this stuff. No freeze issues ...

Kitchen Sink Question

I have a 1999 Patriot with pex piping throughout. The cold water in the kitchen sink suddenly has very little pressure. The hot is fine (it's a 1-handle faucet), and other cold water supplies in the bathrooms and outside faucet are fine. Just the kitchen sink. I've pulled the strainer on the end of ...

Re: Skirting Vents?

building america has done a lot of research on this topic and its now believed that in many climates, vented crawlspaces cause moisture problems. you will have to research what is recommended for your climate, but the ideal crawlspace is unvented and conditioned, which results in cleaner inside air...

Re: Window Units or Mini-Split?

How much were the 20 rooftop solar panels though? When we installed our solar in 2004 the panels were $900 each. The whole 4Kw system retailed for about $42,000 but there was a federal tax credit for 1/3 of that AND a state cash rebate of another 1/3. Ten years later the cost of that whole system w...

Re: Skirting Vents?

No matter how "cheap" your skirting is, it isn't cheap, so buy the best skirting you can afford if you plan to stay a few years. My vinyl skirting is insulated with 2" of Styrofoam glued to it. I also have "automatic" vents that open and close with temperature, but I cover t...

Re: Window Units or Mini-Split?

I've got a 16 X 80 single wide and I stopped using central air and furnace a couple of years ago. I've got a 5000 btu window unit in the bedroom and a 10,000 in the living room/kitchen. Two bedrooms are only used for storage and those doors stay closed. Our 20 rooftop solar panels generate plenty of...

Bubbles in the Linoleum

We have sheet linoleum in the kitchen that is "bubbling" - coming loose from the subfloor and forming unsightly bubbles throughout the floor. Is there a way to fix this without removing the linoleum? I don't know if it's glued to the floor uniformly or in select spots.
Anyone?

Re: Frozen pipes and propane shortage stories

We ordered propane and had the tank filled in September when it was $1.65/gallon. It's near $4 now around here (central Indiana). YIKES! Glad we have a big tank. We also had frozen pipes last week when temps were below zero. That's when I discovered a bit of a "blowout" in the skirting nea...

Re: Looking for Manual for Martin SCF36M(B) Fireplace

I did a bunch of looking online as well with no luck. The only thing I saw that made sense was the post that "the model is nearly 30 years old and it may be a better idea to pull it out and put in a new one."
Good luck!
