Excessive dust

I am constantly having to fight excessive dust. When I first moved out here, the road was unpaved, and so I attributed the dust to living off a dirt road. But, the county paved it about a year ago - and the dust doesn't seem to have declined at all. I replaced the entire A/C exchange unit a couple y...

Re: Replacement window question

I replaced ALL of my single pane windows. Cost me about $1450 for the windows (not including trim, etc) at Home Depot (custom sized ordered). So far, my electric bill is DOWN $195 for the year so far - which fully pays for one of the windows. FWIW - I also got about $500 back on fed taxes as an ener...

Re: Mysterious "Dripping" Sound

I heard the 'dripping' sound while installing a sprinkler system. And, it certainly was a drip. If you can get under your place to the area you hear the dripping sound...kind of 'slap' the underbelly. If it moves like jelly....it may well be full of water. And it is a mess/hassle/PIA to fix.

Re: leaky roof

I'd like to re-roof mine with metal - but am wondering if it is too much for one guy. I would want to tear off the existing shingles, tear off all the facia, replace the facia, then install the metal. There's a hundred sites out there that makes it look like a 10 year old could do it all in 30 minut...

Skirting ideas that can handle backfill

My place sits on a sloped terrain with the vinyl skirting. Of course, the previous owner backfilled the skirting on the two high sides (due to the terrain) and it is collapsing - making a wide open entrance for varmints and critters that eat varmints. (please see other entries entitled: SNAKES!) It ...

Re: Just a bit of a water problem

Luckily - the sub floor is OSB. The wet area was confined to just where the CVPC piping passes through the floor, and as near as I can tell, the leaky culprit was the shut off valve for the dishwasher. From the wet area, it looks like the piping provided a path for it all to follow - down to the elb...

Re: Just a bit of a water problem

Greg- The sub floor part has got me the most nervous as this section is occupied by a nice long section of kitchen cabinets - and 'high quality' is not a word usually associated to these standard issue cabinets. The dishwasher sits in there also - so I suppose its lines are suspect, also. If PEX is ...

Just a bit of a water problem

It was a gorgeous sunny day, so I decided to work on getting the control valves for a new sprinkler system put into place. And, as every good story goes, I kept hearing this dripping sound. I raised the skirting, and oh boy. Not only was I able to find the drip...but the entire underbelly in that ar...

Re: Window replacement-tricks for mobile homes?

Greg - dang - you're killin me! The skirting is next....and a MAJOR undertaking to boot. This place is mounted into the a gently sloping terrain. However, the fools who put it here - were either crazy or not too bright - or both! :) All of the skirting now is the plastic stuff. The skirting on the e...

Re: Window replacement-tricks for mobile homes?

I am a spreadsheet kind of guy. And while I do like a good building project - like building an outdoor O gauge train layout, or replacing windows...I always end up back at the spreadsheet. I guess its just a "numbers" thing. Over the years, I have accumulated lots of numbers. One set of th...

Re: Window replacement-tricks for mobile homes?

Greg,

You're right about the trim out. It's gonna be a little bit more than I thought! :)

Now, for those tools.... you mean there's a limit?

Re: Window replacement-tricks for mobile homes?

Home Depot and Lowe's both called on the same day for the balance of the new windows. All-in-all the process to install remained the same and all 6 were installed in one day. As i mentioned before I had to buy one window from Lowe's as the Home Depot order program would not allow the size I needed. ...

SNAKES!

Last year, the field mice took over. Believe me, their reproduction makes rabbits seem like amateurs! And getting rid of them was akin to making sure the last kernel of corn is popped when you can't see inside the bag! Meanwhile - out in the duck enclosure, the eggs were disappearing by the dozen. Fi...

Re: Window replacement-tricks for mobile homes?

After freezing my butt off for the last 5 winters, I am replacing every single one of these aluminum frame, single pane windows. Of course, not one of them is a stock size except at a mobile home parts dealer - and their pricing is formidable. Home Depot and Lowe's both offer custom ordering for jus...
