Re: Installing heavy ceiling fixture

Usually the ceilings have trusses made of 2x2s. Figure out where the box will go, drill the appropriate size hole for the box. You can then insert a 20" to 30" 2x4 in the hole and go up over the lower 2x2 of the truss, lay it so it is flat on the wide side. Run some 3" construction sc...

Re: help..how to attach molding

A knife. Just slip it under the edge of the trim and cut the adhesive. Any knife will do, I use a knife with a flat edge that I sharpen with a stone once in a while. A serrated edged knife would work too.

Re: Help installing new MDF molding..

Molding adhesive is a quick grab product. Apply it to the trim either in a thin line or dots along it's length with a caulk gun. Put it where you want it, hold it in place for about 30 seconds then move on to the next piece.

Re: Suspended Ceiling or Sheet Rock?

I will throw this out there since I saw it not long ago for a room replacement ceiling. They tore down the old ceiling ( Cellutex panels) and insulation. Installed new insulation and plastic vapor barrier then for a finished ceiling they installed 3/8" OSB. Screwed into rafters, screw holes fil...

Re: Gurgling sound from washing machine drain pipe

Not a vacuum but a vent. Kind of like having your finger over the end of a straw, if no air can get in no water can get out. Hot water won't melt a frozen sewer. The only thing that works is a torpedo heater aimed down the length of the sewer or getting the underside of the home above freezing for s...

Re: Gurgling sound from washing machine drain pipe

Drain water will flow out of the system at it's lowest point. Normally when a sewer is frozen, when the toilet is flushed things back up into the bath tub. That is the lowest open point in the drainage system of the home. Anything that goes down the sinks also backs up into the bathtub, again becaus...

Are you sure it's blocked and not frozen? We have had plenty of frozen sewers around here this year.

Re: Electrical Boxes at Marriage Wall?

If there are any plugs on those wires get rid of them. I found most of the electrical problems we track down for Dwides are the plug connections themselves. All of the wiring is number coded, if yours isn't, be sure to label it all so you get the same wiring back together. Simply cut power, cut the ...

Re: Insulation/plumbing questions

You're overthinking this stuff. Using the encapsulated gives you a product that breathes, is easy to handle and staple up. Cutting it full length allows one to push each end over the I-beam and the center of it under the duct work creating the belly or sag between the beams where all the plumbing is...

Re: Replacing Toilet - 1977 Bendix

Usually all the same size. What you have to be sure of is the "rough in" dimension, it should be 12". That is the measurement from the wall behind the toilet to the center of the floor flange. If less you may have trouble with some toilets due to their design. However there are situat...
