Re: true hard wood flooring vs laminate

one thing about laminate flooring. It will wear much better than hardwood if you have pets. Although I must say, our dog is not too keen on the lack of traction, plenty of rubber backed mats for her though.

Re: Trouble with Neighbors

Much the same here with people trying to stick their noses where they don't belong. I have become more anti social as a result. Let them go on with their pitiful existence, but don't draw me in just to suck the life out of me like a bunch of vampires. I smile and wave as I drive by, but get involved...

Re: Replace entire roof deck?

If you want 40 yrs out of it plywood is the way to go. I would recommend 5/8 T&G.

Re: Replace entire roof deck?

First, when you are on the roof, step on the rafters, not between them, it will support your weight better. If you are re sheathing the roof with plywood, do the whole thing and then cover it in ice/water shield. Preferably Grace brand if you can get it. Once that is on the roof is waterproof and an...

Re: Adding an overhang to existing roof

In Ontario, a permit is not required if you are not changing the slope, or restructuring the roof. Eaves are not considered a structural element of the roof. So unless framing members are being replaced or cut into, you do not need a permit. You may add pretty much whatever you want to the existing ...

Re: Adding an overhang to existing roof

Hi Mark Welcome fellow Canuk! I replied to your PM, but should add to it. If you have 2x6 trusses on your roof and add a 2x4, on edge as I did, I would, along with the ridge vent, and vented soffit, add styrofoam baffles and then insulation. If you can get it sprayed with Walltight (the blue stuff M...

If you have a router and table saw, you can make up your own moldings from flatstock for about 1/4 the price of buying it.

Re: Insulation ~ Outside

I got mine at Moffat and Powell, It is also at Rona, and at other building stores. I put siding over mine. R 5.5 doesn't sound like much, but it is the air infiltration barrier and the reflective foil that makes the difference. It acts like a house wrap if you Tuck Tape the seams. Just ask about Exo...

Re: Insulation ~ Outside

I sheathed mine in Exotherm. A polyisocyanurate foam insulation covered in foil both sides. You have to use tuck tape (the clear red stuff) on the seams. I used a 3/4" which is R5.5, the real benifit comes from sealing the air infiltration and the foil reflecting the heat. It also uncouples any...

Re: Spray entire home w/ foam spray insulation

The spray foam in the cans is only a 1/2 lb. foam. The ones on TV for the whole house is a 2 lb. foam, professionally applied. There are kits (tiger foam is one I think), but they are expensive. The brand name of the pro applied foam (in Canada) is Walltight. It is probably the best way to insulate ...

Re: Changing water heater from elec. to gas

You will likely have a problem finding a gas water heater that is rated to be used in a MH. If you're water is that hard a water softener would help for sure, but at least some sort of filter system instalation. Even the cheap Rainfresh brand ones. Put in 2 or 3 of them in series. The first uses a c...
