How can I reinforce interior door frames?

Pulling out the nails from trim made me notice how the doorframes aren't as stable as I would like them to be, can I...
Add extra shims?
Add more nails?
Fill area between MDF doorframe and wood framing with something?
Help would be appreciated.

great replies, thanks everyone, I'll post pics of the finished doors/rooms soon, the Kilz primer and paint are working out great, everyone was right, a gallon of paint can make a huge difference!

Jim- what is ICI?
Yanita, I have heard great stuff about SW, but a lot of other stick built homeowners and contractors seem to HATE Behr paint for some reason, even though Consumer Reports rated it very highly.

how much can MH walls hold?
I'm installing some torsion box shelving (floating shelves) but don't want my walls to collapse <-- it's dramatic I know

thanks Greg, and Denise, I'm going to fill the void at the top of my wallboards where some of the panels don't meet the ceiling (hence the tacky trim covering the bare wood beam underneath) it's good to hear that you had success with that, I wasn't sure how I'd finish the top after cutting away the ...

I know I'll get suggestions to leave the battens on, which they're not that eye-catching anyways, but the decorating I'm doing in some of my rooms require that they come off. thanks Greg that helped, I'm definitely planing some trim for around the windows, and despite the pics they're actually quite large, so I'm going with 3 1/2'' trim.
