Re: Torx (Star Drive) Screws

It looks like the Phillips Head was designed to purposely slip (cam-out, at a specific force to prevent over torquing or stripping, when used by a person and not a machine. The Torx was designed for automatic machines that can be set to a certain amount of torque and be consistent. Also the 6-Points...

Re: Torx (Star Drive) Screws

"square/cross combo," that's the type that the hinges had. I wonder how much the company save by including such low quality screws. I was going to use my new Palm Nailer when installing the door, but decided screws were a better Idea. You can back out a screw better than a nail. I screw up...

Torx (Star Drive) Screws

I love these screws more and more every time I use them. :D Home Depot has them. I just installed a new pre-hung exterior door and the 4 Phillips screws they include are JUNK and the first one started to strip out the head without much force at all. Luckily I had some head showing and backed...

Filter availability for package Unit

I had our Packaged A/C Heat Pump Unit serviced yesterday because it was shutting down when it got too cold and the Electric Element wouldn't kick in. Also had the annual filter change. One Element was broken and and replaced, along with a system diagnostic. Free under warranty. The filter was $99.00...

Re: Trim the bottom of new exterior doors

Well, I called Andy on Call and got a call back a couple of days later saying he would come out to estimate on a friday. NO SHOW. He called 2 days later and said he forgot to come over.....Right. A few more days and said he would be over after his job was finished on Saturday. NO SHOW. Haven't heard...

Re: Toilet Flushing Issues

Could a rag have been left in the drain opening when the toilet was installed?
Like a rag left in an engine cylinder when putting the head on. That was a fiery start up.

Re: Questions to ask before moving

And it looks like at least 2 axles fell off and landed under the bridge.
Why did they fall off? Did they forget to bolt them to the frame? Inquiring minds.

Re: Trim the bottom of new exterior doors

I pulled down a section of the wall paneling next to the door. I found that the header is 2 2x4's stacked and toe nailed on either end into the 2 vertical studs instead of onto a cripple. No cripples, just 2 studs nailed together. I also found the old doorbell transformer, not used in years, BUT STI...

Re: Things I'd do differently..

" keeping it simple for resale" is always my problem.
I always have to sit back and ask, would this mod hurt a resale?
The wife helps me in these decisions cause she thinks simple. Not simple minded.

The way that housing sales are going ,we'll probably be here until the END.

Re: Trim the bottom of new exterior doors

Update: I cut away the trim molding around both doors and find that both have double 2x4 headers plus a cripple and king stud, so the guy did it right. The surround paneling I find is 1/8" mush board, vinyl covered, under a lot of paint. As soon as I get to Lowe's and see what they have in stoc...

Re: Trim the bottom of new exterior doors

I just realized that the present threshold is part of my measurement and it woild be removed to mount the pre-hung door which has it's own threshold. I will eventually be adding 1/2" plywood and Pergo to the porch floor, which is only 1/4" over 2x6 underfloor. Originally supposed to be a p...

Trim the bottom of new exterior doors

I want to install (or have it done) 2 exterior pre-hung combo door units in our enclosed porch. The porch is standard construction, not the aluminum porch style.

The height is the problem, because they are both about 79-1/2" high.
Is their a brand that can be trimmed off at the bottom.

Re: How much insulation in the roof?

Me too, I wonder how. I wan to put a camera up the bathroom fan hole when I pull it out to replace. I have a vaulted ceiling that tapers wider as it nears the peek. I guess they could remove different roof vents to gain access, but they would have to be roofers also, so they can re-shingle when they...
