Re: CPVC to PEX for intermediate plumbing

... I'm better off saving my energy and money until I'm ready to go full PEX. So much for thinking I'd slowly wade in to it (PEX)... This kind of stuff, along with my flooring that looks like it was constructed by someone with a roller-coaster fetish (T-joists all higher than the others, causing th...

Re: Sediment in water supply lines

Indeed...in my case, installing a filter seems to be more trouble than it is worth. I managed to flush most of the sediment out through the outside hose bibb just by running the water at full tilt for about 5-10 pump cycles...along with multiple cleanings of all the faucet cartridges and screens, an...

Re: Sediment in water supply lines

Hi Greg, Yes, I suppose I'll just have to be patient and let the sediment slowly work its way out. Where is the filter usually placed...before or after pressure tank, main shut-off valve? I'd like to keep the sediment out of the tank as well, however there's not much room to work there before the ri...

Sediment in water supply lines

Hi All, After flushing and recharging my pressure tank recently, I have had problems with sediment in the cold water lines plugging up fixtures and reduced water pressure. Anyone have any ideas on how to quickly flush all the sediment from the entire cold water system? I have had this problem before...

Re: Well pump?

The last submersible pump I purchased cost about $600 plus $200 labor to install...a good pump should last about 20 years. It does look like you are missing a portion of your supply pipe which should emerge from the 4" riser tube. Look out in the yard for the well head...that is where the pump ...

Re: window sills

...peeled off as much of the old paneling/sill lining as possible, patched with 1/4 luann, and cut strips of granite patterned stick on tile, (stuck on and stapled in place about every 4 inches) and caulked the edges of the tiles.... Brenda (OH) Brenda, this is exactly what I was thinking of doing....

window sills

Hi Gang, Not all, but most of the paneling that lines my window sills is rotten and falling apart :( , the result of condensation between my inside storm windows and the outside windows. I am curious as to how others have dealt with this problem. I was thinking of replacing the sill lining with piec...

Re: How big of a problem are trees when 2 ft from foundation

What's more important, wind break or protecting the foundation. Both are important, but protecting the foundation in this case is much more important. Trees, especially large trees with large spreading root systems can be very damaging to foundations. The species you mention can grow to large trees...

Re: Find the problems - win a mug #2

Just went "down under" to look at my piers...I have a concrete pad, then two concrete blocks side-by-side parallel to the I-beams. Atop those I have a single concrete block(with holes) perpendicular to the I-beam and atop that a solid 4" high concrete block. Then a single hardwood boa...

Re: Find the problems - win a mug #2

1) No footer or pad beneath blocks
2) Holes in blocks should be vertical/not horizontal
3) Wood shims should be same width/hardwood only
4) Shouldn't have a wedge-shaped shim at top

Re: 1997 multiple water line leaks

I hear ya JD...just don't know who or what to trust nowadays...morality seems to have been lost and forgotten...I guess it's a crapshoot with whatever products are used. PEx still seems to have a far better record than polybutylene (however most of my PB plumbing is still going strong after 25 years...

Re: 1997 multiple water line leaks

With multiple leaks in PEx, I would find out exactly what failed. Just guessing, I would think that it is a problem with the fittings and not the PEx line. It could be installer error. The year 1997 makes me wonder if the fittings were the Zurn-Qest fittings that are involved in the class action su...

Re: Bending strength of PB vs PEx pipe

Thanks JD, I feel better about the bends in my PB pipe under the floor as most don't even come close to resembling an 8" circle. On second thought, after you proposed my above floor toilet supply line fix(which I need to do anyhow because of an inoperative Qest shut-off valve), maybe the pipe w...

Bending strength of PB vs PEx pipe

Hello All, I haven't posted in awhile...but I do lurk on occasion...still one of the best websites out there! I have a question concerning polybutylene pipe for all of you plumbing experts. What is the maximum amount of bend that PB can withstand w/o damage or potential failure? I know that bending ...

Re: Snow/ice on roof

I actually climb a ladder and get onto my roof and shovel off the entire surface if the snow depth is 6" or better...luckily I am still physically able to do this. I have a regular asphalt-shingled roof which is 25 years of age and still looks remarkedly good, probably the result of my diligenc...
