Re: moving a floor heater vent in kitchen Moderators: Mark, Greg, mhrAJ333, JD

Their *stupidity* comes from the book of "Fastest and Cheapest"....with a one page chapter on real engineering. :) I, too, had floor vents in places that would make your mama cry. One in the kitchen blew anything on the floor to the stove top. Another set less than a foot from a toilet alw...

If the paint has lost adhesion to the main surface - sand it down.

Re: Replacing Piers on 1973 Mobile Home

I'm not gonna say the guy was a scammer - but as long as the piers are not cracked or broken - they should be good to use. There is one pic where several 'spacers' are stacked on top of the pier - which i would not want to do. Flat concrete blocks can be added to the bottom to lift the pier up so th...

Re: Leak detector on water meter spins back and forth

Ok...I may be out in the weeds on this one...but.... the little red spinner is very sensitive to any water movement, hence a very small leak will cause it to spin. That said, I would venture the jumping is due to other houses on the same service line opening and closing faucets. The reduction in pre...

Re: Moving my HW tank outside.

You sound like a capable handy guy - and I am thinking that for the cost of a new tank plus some means to shelter it - it may be about the same to do one or those wall mounted tankless water heaters. You didn't say which you have, but they come in either gas or electric. If doing electric, usually t...

Re: Circuits, what is excessive?

I got some bad news for you. The cheap $%#@& that built these homes were focused exclusively on profit. My place has every outlet and every light on 2 breakers. And, while i have no wiring diagrams to support it, I believe it is one breaker per half (double-wide). Their configuration may meet re...

Re: flex ducts

yuk. not a good choice. ***Disclaimer*** I am not an HVAC guy in any professional capacity. I know what i know from having to stick my head into the beast....and even that is questionable. It was aggravating, stressful, and ultimately i had to just take the bull by the short hairs. The bull regrets ...

Re: 2-combo single pole lightswitch problems

I would start with the easy stuff first.

Take the LED bulb out and replace it with a standard incandescent bulb. I have had some LED bulbs that have done some weird and strange stuff.

Re: disconnected flex duct to plenum

I am assuming there is a 90° turn to connect to the plenum. Flex duct always has the tendency to kink with any short radius bend. I think I would consider using a metal elbow to connect to the plenum, and then add a 5ft straight piece to compensate for the flex that needs to be cut away. Hopefully y...

Re: Concrete foundation to keep mice out

To add: Here is the dialog i had with some HVAC contractors on re-designing the ducting. Unfortunately - and i hope i am wrong - you're heading into a major project. https://www.diychatroom.com/f17/convert-downflow-upflow-638539/ Here is the post i put here when the project was done. https://www.mob...

Re: Concrete foundation to keep mice out

you mention they may be getting in through the floor vents. That is probably the worst news at this point. If they have made access into the the ducting - there are a whole bunch of things that will now start. 1) Swiss cheese. These little critters love to chew - and they love to re-design your duct...

Re: Discussion on Mobile Home Piers & Tie-Downs

If you have any plans to sell your place - now or in the near future - tie-down requirements have changed - and it impacts financing. Re: newbie question on exterior panel replacement...

the stuff i used was SmartSide from HD. Of course, HD gouges every dime they can get ! :) Removal and replacement is kinda/sorta straight forward - but be ready to go a bit further than just replacing the panels. From the pics - you would have to remove the trim boards, and if there has been water d...

Re: Crossover duct sizing.....

I see this is a very old thread...but I am hoping my experience can help others. As Greg mentioned - my flex duct (one 12" run to each half of a DW) - was pretty much just left laying on the ground. And - yep, critters had a field day. And, after they chewed up the flex - they made their way th...
