Saving money ....

We all like to have money to spend, so why throw it away? Here's a couple of tips that I learned as a kid. Sorry, no miracles here, but if you aren't doing this you are wasting money needlessly! The fridge-freezer. Being single, the fridge holds my current stock of beer and the freezer is rarely use...

Re: Installing exhaust fan under mobile home.

If you could post the install photos, that would be great! Make it a "how to" on the subject, and hilight any problems you may have hit, and how you got around them? It may help a lot of people down the road that are looking at similar projects! :D

Re: Gravel around skirting -- good idea?

As an alternate to guttering the edges of the roof, you could go with a full French drain - it costs a little more than guttering, but is pretty well maintenance free since there is no leaf buildup to clean out. I'm sure you're familiar with the standard U shaped guttering that catches the water fro...

In this case, buried = camouflaged! The junction box they installed wont even close properly. That goes on the to-do list to go back and fix, but it's a long way down that list!!

Re: Lawnmower maintenence 101....arrrgghhh!

One of my neighbors has a front yard that is all desert landscaping (all rock) and has a rusted out old push mower sat in the corner - always makes me smile when I see it :) When I first moved to AZ, at Christmas we hung a snow shovel over the front door with a sign on it ... "lest we forget&qu...

Re: underground utilities

Then again, you have to remember people like the Cox Cable contracted installers. They came to lay in a new cable to my home from the cable junction which is directly behind the home. Total run length is about 8 feet, and they buried just the cable (no conduit) at a depth of 2-3" - they moved t...

Re: pipes in winter

I have a compressor - I bought it originally to top up the pressure on my motorcycle tires since many gas station compressors seem to struggle with anything over 35lb/sq.inch . I use an adaptor (an old bicycle inner tube and valve) which seats nicely over the faucet and gives me a valve to which to ...

Re: Gravel around skirting -- good idea?

I'd go a slightly longer route and dig a channel around the skirting, then fill that with gravel. Sort of a french drain, on the cheap! Rainwater is going to hit the siding no matter what you do. but the earth under the siding you can protect by channelling the water away from it. An hour or so with...

Re: What could be causing this?

Odd that the marks are in line like that .... I wonder! Do you have ceiling fans running? Possibly bugs being sucked into the fan, or an excess of dust bunnies on the fan? The fingerprint theory sounds good, but the photo shows that you are not a regular curtain-peeper since the marks are descending...

Re: Wood stove installation - placement questions

Just an odd thought here, on the subject of the air intake. Since the provision requires an outside air source for the stove, and an exterior wall isn't available in the picture, what about bringing in the air from roof level instead of through the belly? For example, a broad duct with the chimney r...

Re: pipes in winter

Also late to the party here, but in the case you are going to be away for some time, consider installing a drain valve in the water line, just after the main shut-off valve. Before leaving, simply close the supply valve, open the drain valve, and open all the faucets in the home, staring with the fu...

Re: Low Pressure on Hot Water @ Kitchen Sink Only

Do you live in a hard water area? The reason I ask is that scale, or calcium, that has come loose from the boiler may be the cause of the problem. The loose pieces would flow happily through the system until they reach a trap - possibly a right angle joint or a poorly made joint that has a piece of ...

It might help if you refer to it as a "manufactured home" instead of a "mobile home" - you may find that some of the people you have already contacted may change their tune! I have just posted a reply in another topic in this same forum entitled "Fire Trap", and linked ...

I did some hunting and found some official stuff you may be interested in. Specifically a 40 page report prepared in 2005 for the National Fire Protection Association, and entitled "Manufactured Home Fires". A direct quote from the summary of the document: "Manufactured homes have a h...

Re: Installing exhaust fan under mobile home.

You might want to move all the perforated skirting into one section on the far end from the fan. Otherwise, it will simply change the air at the fan end and barely affect the intake end at all since the air will be drawn through the perforations on the sides. Another idea is to buy a small solar pan...
