Re: We have a new owner!

Hello and welcome AJ. I am looking forward to the changes in the forum. I used to spend quite a bit of time here every day, when there was more traffic. In the last couple or more years I have been heavily involved in another passion of mine. It seems like Greg and other users have done a fine job b...

Re: Emergency roof repair help needed.

I agree with Greg. You will need to repair the trusses. As long as you are or have able body workers it does not need to be expensive. No point in putting in a textured sheetrock ceiling in if you are going too demo the house. After the repair, you can replace the insulation and then just fasten up ...

Re: the ins and outs, pros and cons of better bellies

I have been in the mobile home repair business for over 30 years. I have done most every repair from roofs to sets and relevels and every type of remodel in between. My thought is that you may be over thinking the under belly. I would recommend using the very affordable mobile home underbelly that i...

Re: 2.4 /12 pitch

Minimum pitch for shingle warranty is 2.5/12. Would a 2.4/12 be voided? Maybe. No big loss though. The warranty is for defects in manufacturing, which will be highly unlikely. 25 yr shingles are not guaranteed for 25 yrs. Got to read the warranty. Ice & Water shield can be installed instead of r...

Re: new roof ideas

As a mobile home repair pro and a bass player, I will say you have no hope. Bass frequency will travel through roofs, floors, walls, windows, period. A Single-ply rubber (TPO, PVC, etc) will reduce the noise, if you use a dense and thick insulation panel like poly-iso, 2" minimum. I would also ...

Re: Flood Damage, Replace Entire Subfloor

I agree with the other posters here. Plywood not OSB. I can bend the edge of an OSB panel with my bare hands. You can feel some give on new OSB nailed down to 16" centers. Contractors will add a profit percentage to all materials purchased, so it will cost more than the plywood itself. I always...

Re: Skylight repair/replace?

Whether you replace the skylight or roof over the hole is up to you. I don't know which would be cheaper, if done properly. If you are roofing over, I would replace the sheathing where the hole is, which would require replacing more shingles. When installing a skylight, a leak free installation is a...

Re: roof leaking around vents

I would replace the plastic vent cap for a metal one like the picture below. It is possible that you cracked the plastic one when trying to get the rubber grommet screws tightened down tight enough to seal. If feasible, remove all sealants around the vent to the original metal and clean well with la...

Re: Gutter installation question

When I install gutters I want to get the back lip of the gutter tucked up under the J-channel of a metal roof or the nose edge of a comp shingle roof. Put your fasteners into the studs.

Re: Over-engineering

A good way to strengthen floor joist is to add blocking between the joists. I also had a customer whose front load washing machine, would shake the home. I added 2 adjustable steel piers with a 4x6x8' under the W/D. Added some blocking and there was no shake at all. I have done this same thing with ...

Re: Plumbing vs. underbelly

Seems to me just adding a Tee to go direct to the kitchen and capping off the plumbing after the GB sink would get your best hot water. I have included a your drawing showing the red as the new line. All of the gray would be 3/4" To locate and cut the belly only where the pipe is, just follow t...

Re: Unleveling home to make windows and doors more square?

Checking the level is a good idea, especially if you are confident the results are right. Assuming the level at the I-beams is good (within 1/4"), you could do a very simple check on the perimeter piers/joist with a stringline. Run the stringline 15' in each direction of a door or window in que...

Re: Leveling shower door

Looks to me like the screw used as a pivot hinge in picture #3, that is out of position, at an angle, is the problem. That looks like almost an 1/8" movement at the top edge, which could easily make a 3/8" drop in the opposite bottom corner. Still might be able to straighten it out with sp...

Re: Plumbing

Your poly to cpvc should work fine for pvc if you use a mulit-purpose cement as shown in the image. CPVC is suitable for water coming out your house faucets. PVC is for garden hose bibs or other non-potable water use. This cement may be approved by a building inspector, but I have found that it woks...
