Re: Laminate flooring, orientation, transitions and entrance

What's going on there? Lucky you, you can actually see the tops of your counters! :-) (I've got stuff piled everywhere from my recent/on-going move) BTW - Seeing as I'm in a hurry to get the flooring down everything conspired against me today! After fishing out something my wife dropped down the kit...

Re: Laminate flooring, orientation, transitions and entrance

Soon I'll be needing to account for the transition strips, the spacing. In the first bedroom I'm parallel to the opening and have only to drop in a last piece. But... for the master bedroom I'll be running perpendicular and will need to continue on past it (along the back wall and into the closet). ...

Re: Laminate flooring, orientation, transitions and entrance

It's good to make some headway. With this bedroom done we can actually sleep somewhere other than the kitchen! Next up with be the master bedroom so that we can get a real bed set up (air mattresses are fine for a couple of days). I splurged on the saw- a Royobi, which works really well (had great r...

Re: Exterior door jamb repair

Ha ha! I've got to get one or two (will need a livestock guardian dog or two). My wife telecommutes and is home alone a fair amount of time; plus, her hearing isn't great! Initially she didn't want animals in the house, but she's since, wisely, adjusted this thinking :-) But, yes, security in layers!

Re: Laminate flooring, orientation, transitions and entrance

Update! Got vinyl planking down in the kitchen and laundry rooms. And... got laminates done in one bedroom (my test room). I consulted with a carpenter friend, who was a bit perplexed as to what was going on, and the only real reason he could come up with is that the floor joists were likely hemlock...

Re: Laminate flooring, orientation, transitions and entrance

I picked up a long straight edge and ran it over several locations in the floor. The good is that the kitchen, where I am wanting to start, seems pretty level (straight surface). The bad is that I'm finding several hills and valleys elsewhere. It's like the particle board is sagging or something bet...

Re: What the heck IS this? (odd plumbing shutoff valve?)

Well, I braved potential disaster and yanked the top up, and lo and behold it popped up and the water is off! Pretty tough pull, but yeah, that did it! :D

Re: What the heck IS this? (odd plumbing shutoff valve?)

I pull it up to shut it off, or do I push it down? The dishwasher wasn't in use, so I don't know what it's on/off state is. I suppose that I could have gotten a clue from the ones in the bathrooms (easier to check water from faucets/toilets rather than trying to run the dishwasher [which I don't kno...

Re: Laminate flooring, orientation, transitions and entrance

Hi Greg! Yes, the floor does feel solid. That's kind of what I figure is the real test. It's just a dining room, where a table will reside, no fitness equipment or anything :-) Corners cut? This is likely everything. If the ceiling wasn't cut by a drunk, could it have been poor initial construction ...

What the heck IS this? (odd plumbing shutoff valve?)

I'm needing to remove a dishwasher, and this thing is staring me in the face! I twisted it (cause that's how most valves seem to work), but, out of fear* of breaking something, didn't attempt to PULL it. * OK, I'm always afraid of breaking things, but I'm not residing in the home (yet), and I'm curr...

Re: Laminate flooring, orientation, transitions and entrance

One more, this of the laundry room... Flooring not soft or crumbly at all. Looks worse than is. The other side of the door is similar. BTW - That's a security bar on the door; the door jamb was kicked in the door has a 2x6 screwed across it (another great "repair" job by the renter!): NOTE: the prev...

Re: Laminate flooring, orientation, transitions and entrance

My "other" concerns... Discolored/damp areas. First two pictures are of the master bedroom. There had been a leak in the roof on that end of the home that was mostly detectable on the other side of the roof line (noted from dripping into the bathroom exhaust/light), but there doesn't appear to be an...

Re: Laminate flooring, orientation, transitions and entrance

Here are some pictures of the "patch" in the dinning room sub floor. I've got one from underneath, which was taken by the guy who inspected the home (I don't think he did a very good job!). I suspect that there was a leak from one of the water lines (I believe that the Tees shown in the picture take...

Re: Laminate flooring, orientation, transitions and entrance

Just got back from ripping out about 650 sq ft of carpeting- YUCK! Tack strips, but not staples, all removed in 3 hours. Should get the living room up in about 45 minutes or so, once I remove the mountain of remnants that I piled there :-) Looks like someone patched the floor in the dining room. Big...

Re: Laminate flooring, orientation, transitions and entrance

Greg, What do you recommend for making round-ish cuts? I've got a jigsaw, would that work? Unsure what kind of blade would work best. Fortunately, it doesn't look like I have many non-straight cuts. Oh... Finally now have full access to the home. I tore out the vinyl in the laundry room and kitchen....
