Re: For JD and other roofing experts...

I have noticed that when people lathe and put metal over shingled roofs there are never any problems with noise. Would plywood decking over the lathes be feasible? That's to say to completely scrap the job and start over with just plywood and metal?

For JD and other roofing experts...

I recently had a couple of renovations done to my mobile home. One of the main ones was a roof over. I had started to get leaks and didn't want to put up with that. I also had a hard time keeping the gutters clean because I live under a LOT of trees. I'd have to clean it at least once a week in the ...

Re: Roof-Over Overhang Question

He said that it was badly out of square. He is going to come out in the next week or so and pop a chalk line. Once he does that he will use a nibbler to straighten it out. He claims that it will look as good as if it came from the factory that way. I am worried about rust but will have to ask him if...

Roof-Over Overhang Question

I just had a metal roof over on my home. It's standard 3/4 " classic rib panels on laths with 3 inch fiberglass insulation with vinyl backing. The problem is that the overhang is 6 inches at one end at 10 inches at the other end. I'm assuming the home is out of square. Should it be like this or shou...

Re: Fiberglass or Double Bubble?

My installer is reputable. He's been in business a long time. He claims that the double bubble deteriorates fast and that he hasn't had much luck with it. He says that he uses 1 x 4 laths and puts a special type of vinyl backed 3 1/2 " insulation in between the old roof and the metal. He claims it w...

Fiberglass or Double Bubble?

I'm having a roof over done on my mobile home. It currently has a metal roof and I'm installing 26 gauge galvalume ag panels over it. I have the option of using fiberglass insulation with vinyl backing or what they call double bubble radiant barrier. My main concern is sound barrier as well as therm...

Re: Window Units or Mini-Split?

Well after TWO years I FINALLY found someone to replace my ducts. They tore out all of the cheap, thin, should-be-illegal metal duct and replaced it with duct board. Problem solved! The old duct COMBINED didn't weigh more than 10 pounds. It was dismal at best. They should not be allowed to use it in...

Re: Window Units or Mini-Split?

jpingram5...thanks for the info. I live in SE Texas and my underbelly is WELL intact. That's why I can't get under there to repair/replace the ductwork. My house is a 16x60. (828 square feet) I was considering a 2-ton split unit. I would put one in my living room/kitchen that is 322 square feet. I w...

Re: Window Units or Mini-Split?

Wow...that's a great deal of info! Thanks! However, what makes the noise are the ducts. I just happen to hear a pop in the air handler at the same time frequently. Someone had suggested that it was expansion/contraction, but it continues for an hour or longer. The ducts just keep popping and popping...

Window Units or Mini-Split?

I have decided today to shut down my central unit completely. I have had such an issue with it and after two years have decided there is no solution to the problem. Up to one hour after the a/c kicks off I hear loud knocking and popping underneath the air handler and in the ducts. My question is wou...

Roof-Over Question

I am having a roof-over installed on my mobile home. How much benefit efficiency-wise is there in using a white colored metal instead of regular unpainted galvalume? I will have 3" insulation installed between my old metal roof and the new one. (Mainly for a sound barrier.) The difference in cost wo...

Thinking About a Mini-Split.

Due to a terrible duct system underneath my home and a very noisy system I am considering a mini-split ductless system. My home is only 858 square feet. Does anyone have any experience with these units?

Need Roof Over Advice

My parents have a 1982 14x70 mobile home. It has had it. Time for a roof over. We want to put metal over it but would like to make sure that we can get it as quiet as possible. Is there any special way to install it or any special materials to use to make it quiet?

Roof Leak Repair Question

I have noticed in my house at the very edge where the ceiling meets the wall there is some moisture there is a wet spot when it rains. I can tell by the dampness and also there is a ring from water damage. It's not exactly a leak because water doesn't come out. It's just damp. I tried to put some ca...
